This from the very youngest of my many MANY sisters, ten years and a day younger than am I.

She says:

When Geoff was 2 or 3 I built a very nice fence in the back. The next year we hired a carpenter to restore the porch. Geoff was watching him, and he started to explain what he was doing.
Carpenter: "This is a circular saw. Does your dad have a circular saw?"
Geoff: "No, but my mom has one.

I don't get it no more than the other one, about the Parrots ? Sat on perches? One says to the other Parrot "Hey! Do you smell fish?

So trying to figure this, your younger Sister made a fence at back for her younger kid Geoff ? Later a carpenter was hired to fix her porch?
Around about then carpenter asked Geoff,if his Dad has a circular saw?
Says young Geoff NO but my Mom has one.
Probably has one from when she made a fence for young son Geoff.
I'm vexed so what's up?

Tangent / thread drift / irrelevant, etc.:

Many decades back a cousin of mine told me [and I have no reason to doubt him] that he had heard this live broadcast... on the radio station from the local/regional ag. fair.  Apparently the reporter was doing some "[wo]man-on-the-street" stuff during the parade.... with a lady and her young daughter at that particular moment. It came out that the father/husband was not at the fair, due to having to travel to some business commitment or other. Reporter kibitzing with kid: "So when Dad's away do you get to sleep with Mom?" Kid: "No, the hired man does."

Simply stated: The carpenter MIGHT HAVE assumed that the building and repairing of stuff around the house would have been done by the Man, because PERHAPS he thought mere women aren't capable of using tools traditionally operated by men.
As to the birds on a perch: The Fun With Words folks know that a perch can be a stick, OR a perch can be a fish.
Two birds are sitting on a DEAD FISH, and one asks......

Mike
Within a family concept your senerio would be similarly interpretated I guess.
As for anyone realistically understanding from afar, then the carpenter is being accused of chovinizm?
When he made a correct assumption by way of his question to young Geoff? This would imply he was correct? Isn't it so that man is declared the hunter while women is the domestic cook cleaner etc ..(generally)

I'm sorry I still don't get Parrots/fish
I await the dawning..

(Owen I thought funny)

One last try

when one hears a JOKE which begins with  "Two birds are sitting on a perch", the first mental image is MOST LIKELY to be something similar to

And then one hears the JOKER say that one bird asks the other "Do you smell FISH?"

and one realizes that in this instance, "perch " refers to a dead fish.

The reaction to the sudden realization that one has been tricked by the use of a word with two meanings is allegedly the reason why puns are considered funny, by some, and the WORST sort of joke, by others.

As for myself, I like a good pun, but I love a bad pun!

That whole ^^ "Do you smell fish?" sounds kinda fishy to me.  IF those birds were parrots I bet it was, "Polly want a cracker?"  cheeky

[.... not to be confused with a cracker https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cracker_(term) ]

In any event, when the Canadian Education Committee gets things organized, nobody will be confused by talking animals [birds??].  https://amotherworld.com/kids/no-more-books-with-talking-animals-in-canadian-schools/

So, if I got this right … a Georgia cracker goes fishing for perch and is appalled/a-Poll-ed when he SAW them swim in a CIRCULAR motion

Polled?? Now I'm gonna get confused.  ...Without horns [not the tuba and Frenchy types]?  ...or a la Dief: "Polls [poles?] are for dogs."  or "Dogs know what to do with poles [polls?]." ?  ... or something like that??

I hope you're just having a mild joke.

Dad is a male, born that way.

Mom is a female, born that way.

Three year old was a 3 year old, due to Earth orbiting the Sun that many times.

Three year old had never SEEN Dad using the family's circular saw, assumed it must belong to Mom, since she was the only person HE had ever seen using it.

Since most power tools in America are either bought BY men or FOR men, the carpenter asked if Dad owned a circular saw.

Mom is competent to build things, using power tools. while Dad was away at work, raking in the big bucks in his field of expertise.

Some women in MY circle of friends and relatives are just really good at making stuff, using tools

If you ask around, there are probably some women like that near where YOU live.

It's considered bad taste to 'like' your own post.

Those of us with manic-depressives in our circle of friends and family are well aware of the difference between actual  "Mood Swings" and  "being annoyed with having to explain things which should be simple enough".

Lilly the Pink is a song in honour of Lydia Pinkham, who sold a patent medicine.

*explain things which should be simple enough*

Parrots on perches ?
We have particular graphic phrases also well known eulogy spoken symbolically with air bag conviction to eager listeners because they love being led along to satisfy groups grasp of corrupted twisted language punishment, and this ill meant enlightenment will and does corrupt - {Obscaenus}

PS: I'm so happy I don't follow your fish birds twigs an' perches..
