So I wanted to start Tom Collins Big eyed rabbit on Banjo Quest. His tuning is fFGCD

But it sounded weird.

So I put it back into normal tuning with an app on my phone.

Alls good but it now sounds strange almost ringy / echoy

Maybe tightening the 5 & 4. String up did something?

I’ve just tightened the tailpiece slightly which has improved it.

Would a 5th string that didn’t have enough tension effect the rest of the strings and the overall sound? (Just wondering)

The fifth string is either in tune or it isn't. If it is in tune, then it will have the right tension. You might search for banjo set up tutorials that offer a step by step list of procedures for adjusting your banjo. Head tension, loose parts, bridge position--everything from the tuners to the tailpiece affects the sound and playability of a banjo.
