trying to decide on a decent banjo to travel with. anyone compare the tones on these two instruments? Price wise of course the ac 12a will save me money for a good case of French wine, but I do have my eye on a B stock carlin at a good price

I've played both, but never side by side. I own an AC12 that I find to have a pleasing tone for clawhammer, and quite loud compared to my other 11" pot banjo, some with metal tone rings.

Nice to know your experience with the banjo. I went ahead and ordered the AC 12 a - short scale. Couldbe a good travel banji so I can leave the Enoch at home

I am in the same dilemma.
How do you like the ac12a?

I have to say I love it. So much so that I sold my $1400 enoch. I added the fiberskyn head and a tim purcel bridge. Thats been my experience. Yours might be different. Let me know how it goes

Sounds like it is worth the money. I have a Deering Goodtime and I am looking for something decent sounding that will fit in the car. I was searching for video reviews of the ac12a but can only find the ones put out by Gold Tone. The sound quality of the recordings doesn't help me much.
Does the 12" rim outweigh the composite material sound wise?

Hi, not sure of your question. The 12-in Carl and with the wood pot is probably a bit heavier than the one with the composite pot. I can just say I was remarkably pleased and surprised with how the banjo sounded. That's because the last composite pot banjo I had was an old Rover maybe 20 years ago and they stunk. I do use a thing inside the back of the pot on the composite banjo it's I forget what it's called they sell it to kind of decrease the overtones. It's a long thing with kind of like a fat snake if you get the name. That along with a fiber skin head and that nice Bridge just really does a nice job the volume is surprisingly loud it's just really nice. If you do it I hope you feel the same way I do it's all I got to say
