In case you haven't heard it, the Jazz Focus podcast has a lot of episodes with some good banjo work in the background. Here's one episode on clarinet solos.

I teach a "History of Jazz" course at my local community college and always include the Jazz Focus podcast on my recommended resources list for my students. I have learned SO much from it over the years.

Dr. John Clark (producer/host of the Jazz Focus podcast) is a renowned musicologist and leader of the Wolverines Jazz Band of Boston. I'm privileged to play with his group periodically as a substitute for their regular banjo/vocalist - the incomparable Jimmy Mazzy. John also is author of several books including "Experiencing Bessie Smith: A Listener's Guide" which is the most definitive & comprehensive book on the Empress of the Blues that I've ever read.

Being Jimmy Mazza’s sub… that’s quite an accomplishment, sir.

Please allow me to doff the mythical chapeau…

Thanks for the compliment, Will. I first heard Jimmy about 40 years ago and have been a devotee of his unique style ever since. I attribute my role as his sub to the fact that I'm probably the only banjo player around familiar with (nearly) 60% of his obscenely immense repertoire.

I'm also lucky enough to be playing along with Jimmy for a couple of upcoming performances including one in Cambridge, Massachusetts (which sold out weeks ago) and another where we'll BOTH be appearing with the Wolverines as part of the Bar Harbor (Maine) Music Festival in July.

I explained years ago to my kids that it's like being invited to sub for or play along with Brian May or Eric Clapton: cherish the moment, keep your ears open and don't forget to pack your anti-perspirant....
