Hi folks, I have several “higher-end” (gold-plated, etched, carved heel) jazz-age tenor banjos - most of which I recently acquired in the neighborhood of $1500. I’m noticing higher-end OMES : grand artists, moguls, etc, - with mostly astronomical prices - and wondering if this is a case of “they are worth what someone will buy them for”? Or if there is something inherently superior in these newer banjos (some of which date back to the 1980’s). OME tenor owners - speak up please! I’m interested in what you think might set these apart from a well set up vintage paramount , B&D, Vega, Gibson, etc. And if there are specific models or years of OME tenors that might really shine.

Thanks!

Tenor banjos generally don't have the same market value as 5 stringers, at least here in the US. With a new neck, likely more, but having a high end OME 5 string neck made to match the tenor neck ain;t cheap either. Good luck!

Right! Tenors don't sell as well as 5-strings but...we ain't all dead yet-tenors still sell.

Thanks for the responses so far - but my question is NOT about the relative value of five strings vs tenors. I’m interested in the value of high end OME tenors - which I have seen listed for as high as 9-12k - vs vintage top-of-the line tenors. I’d love to hear responses to my original question from OME tenor owners. Thanks.

Although it doesn't really belong there, you might get more response when you post this question in this section of the Banjo Hangout: "Playing Advice: 4-String (Jazz, Blues & Other Trad Styles)".

That's where the tenor banjo players hang out, I think many of them don't look very closely at other sections of the BHO.
