I am currently working on a GH&S (British made) 5 string with a basic steel rod ring. I am intending to replace the current vellum (much thicker) with a much thinner one. In the past when I have done that, the steel ring discolours quite quickly from rust and shows through the head. I have trolled through the archives searching to a treatment for this and found a post which say clear coat the ring. With what? An aerosol spray can of lacquer? Any thoughts?

So will a good application of beeswax or paraffin, but the lacquer will probably last longer.

Lacquer is clear

Clear coat is a clear plastic for automotive use and protects for about 7years. I use it on wet skin head flesh hoops
