Robert Lee Pennington played banjo on the original version recorded 12/1/1958. I do not know exactly what version they used, but the info on the YouTube says Pennington as well.

According to Neil Rosenberg's discography, banjoist was Robert Lee Pennington. Recorded on December 1, 1958 with Jack Cook (guitar), Bobby Hicks (fiddle), and Bessie Lee Maudlin (bass).

On top of it all, it is one of the few recordings that Bill Monroe made with an oval hole F-4 mandolin as his Lloyd Loar F-5 was getting fixed.

Olaf I seem to remember the round hole mandolin was a Gibson F4 lent by Connie Gately.
