Hello pickers. I signed up to the site, honestly, to possibly post some items in the classifieds that might be of interest to others in the Hangout. I'm not a total outsider, I do play bluegrass, mostly guitar, but I do play (poorly) a little banjo. I grew up here in Nashville and was very fortunate to hang out at the Station Inn in the old days when the Sunday night jams would usually include people like Charlie Collins, Oswald Kirby, Gene Wooten, and other folks like that. Fun times. Anyway, I have some Earl Scruggs items and other stuff that I was thinking about listing in the classifieds section, but before I did, was just wanting to get some opinions on whether that was ok, etc. I thought about Ebay, but decided maybe this forum might be a better place to list them so that someone who would really appreciate them might have a better shot at them than eBay might afford. I haven't listed them, but what I have is a very fine suit of Mr. Scruggs' that was custom tailored for him, and also a book of matches with "Earl Scruggs Revue" printed on the front. I can't really remember, but I am thinking that I picked those up one night when I went to see the Revue at the Exit In in Nashville (wonderful show- Michael Johnson opened for them) . Anyway, I also have a very large book that Richard Dress (who I found used to post a lot on this forum) put together called "The Serious Picker's Bluegrass Workbook" It has over 1200 pages of songs that he gathered and put together and sent to Mr. Scruggs for review. He put a ton of work into it. So, I'm just hoping to get some ideas on which section of the classifieds I should list them under, and whether that would be ok seeing as I am a newbie here. Thanks very much for any and all advice/comments/reprimands/etc. Thanks very much. Gary Lee, Nashville Tennessee
Well, you're doing well by at least introducing yourself. Many people join BHO just to sell stuff and never even bother to post any kind message other than the want ad.
That said, brand new members who post stuff to sell can be looked on skeptically by the standing members here because, 1. they might have no interest in the give and take of banjo "stuff" in the discussion forums, and 2. often have no idea in the world what it is they are selling and what is a reasonable price, and 3. they provide NO provenance so interested lookers can judge how legit the item might be (is it real, or just a photo lifted off some other internet site? is it hot? is it authentic? is it a gross copy of a more popular brand name item? etc.
Your matchbook might be more interesting to Scruggs collectors than the suit. How does one obtain an Earl Scruggs suit?????? How does one prove it's an Earl Scruggs suit? How did you obtain it?
When you decide to post, include a THOROUGH explanation of each item and MANY photos. Yes the BHO photo posting system is myterious, and although it says you're "limited" to X number of photos, that's just per posting. You can add more photos in a follow up post.
If you have friends on the Hangout, it would be helpful if you can get them to "vouch" for you in whatever way. Anything to make you more familiar.
From a mediocre slow jam player that’s never been to Nashville:
I’d take a bunch of photos of all the cool stuff you’ve described above and post it all with good descriptions and history and post it all in the “collectors’ corner” forum. You’ll get plenty of people that will want to see it all and discuss it, and most likely get good advice and interest in the selling of it all.
My humble advice only.
If you're wanting to post in the classifieds, read the rules and guidelines and then if you have any questions, post them here and we'll try to help you.

Thanks very much, Old Timer, Ban-joe and Texasbanjo. That's very helpful. I will follow the rules and hopefully get stuff posted soon. Texasbanjo, I notice your picture says "Stelling" I'm guessing you play one. One of my oldest friends has a very early Stelling, 1974 or 5, I believe. He bought it new. Wonderful banjo. Thanks y'all!
