Hi folks from a very wet UK.
We have been given a Musima long neck five string and also a five string with a K in a circle.
We’ve no idea about the history or quality of these. Can somebody kindly advise.
We also have another Merlin long neck open back coming in. These I’m told are sought after?
TIA. ??
These were cheap banjos made in East Germany by Musima. Musima made banjos for Kay and these had a K on the head which are otherwise identical to the Musima model, although there seems to be some debate about this. If this isn't the case then I'm not sure why Musima would have used heads with a Kay brand on it in the usual location for other logos. I've seen these banjos with Marma on the head and with nothing on the head. Or is your K in a circle somewhere else? These day Musima banjos in good condition seem to sell for between £100-£150.
When Kay USA went out of business in 1968, that logo showed up all over the world. Real or authorized and by whom? No one knows anymore.
That logo still being used as a trademark by a company operating under the Kay brand. There's always someone at NAMM pushing the brand. I don't know if Newmark owns the brand (they own many) or is just a reseller. New Kay banjo at Newmark
