Does anyone know the chord progression to what I guess I can call the walk down on this tune, I Found a New Baby? It is in Dm and I have the first two chords, Dm, A7 but I can't get the rest of the chords even trying the typical progression. I am playing tenor tuning. Very rarely do I hear it played within the song, but one band I think I heard it was a California jazz band and the horns play it. Now I can't find that version anywhere so I can try and play along and figure out the chords. Thank you.

Some versions of the song, including the one I think Charlie Christian played on, have simplified B sections. Like this:

B Section:

A7 / A7 / Dm7 / Dm7
G7 / G7 / C7 / A7

Some people do the minor walk down against that D minor chord.  The first two bars would go like this:

| Dm DmMaj7 | Dm7 Dm6 |

Some people would substitute a G9 or a G7 for that Dm6.

I hope that tip helps.

I've got a 1953 10" LP of "I've found a new baby" by Wilbur de Paris and his band, with spectacular tenor banjo playing by Eddie Gibbs. The title of the album is Wilbur de Paris, New New Orleans Jazz.

I'm trying to learn this tune myself. There are some good tips here.

You can find a lead sheet in the Firehouse Jazz Band Fake Book which is freely available from various places online.

Eddie Condon played this with various musicians in several of his WWII era jazz concerts. If you go to otrr.org/OTRRLibrary/ and type Condon in the search field you get a list of the concerts. They play I Found A New Baby as the first song in concert six. Condon played plectrum guitar. You almost never hear him play but in this song somebody misplaced the microphone or something. You hear his rhythm playing over the soloists and it's spectacular! He does a chordal walkdown over the G7/C7 part of the A section that I have yet to duplicate.

The absolute best banjo version of this tune I've heard was by tenor banjo great, Paul Miller on his album, "Our Leader" on the Fantasy label.

One of the comments on this video of Bechet's original recording of this tune provides the answer. The passage in question is actually the seldom played verse of I've Found A New Baby. The Firehouse Jazz Band Fakebook includes this in their lead sheet.  (The book seems to not be copyrighted and the tune's copyright has expired.)
