Welcome to the adventure! I would approach this by first learning to strum/pick along the chords. That involves learning at least partial chords for G, Em, C and D.
Then, find the melody notes, on different strings, open and fretted strings. Note that there are several combinations.
Since this song is in 6/8 or 3/4 time, several measures at a time can be played with just a couple of forward (TIM...) or backward (TMI...) rolls without breaking the pattern. The finger that you start a roll with will depend on which string the melody note is on, so, if the melody note is on string 2, you will start your roll with the index finger on string 2: IMT... . If the melody note is on string 1, the roll will start on MTI.... , and on TIM if the melody note is on string 3 or 4 or 5. Lots of possibilities!
Whenever you change the "melody string", you need to break the pattern:
From string 1 to string 2: MTIMT.IMTIMT or MTIMTMIMTIMT
From string 1 to string 3: MTIMTITIMTIM
From string 2 to string 1: IMTIMTMTIMTI
From string 2 to string 3: IMTIM.TIMTIM or IMTIMITIMTIM
From strings 3/4/5 to string 1: TIMTI.MTIMTI or TIMTITMTIMTI
From strings 3/4/5 to string 2: TIMTIMIMTIMT or TIMTIMTMTIMT
Hope that helps!
