Good luck having it not devolve into a political discussion, but I agree it is a good topic and I just read an interesting magazine article that discusses it.
FWIW, the founding fathers in the U.S. were very much opposed to any kind of central bank. Just like they were opposed to a pure democracy. They lost the first, and are losing the latter.
I guess a "discussion" involves more than one person, but how fast that ^^ was kinda took me off-guard.
Edit: Reminds me of a coach giving us the what for in 'ockey, way back: "I'm not going to mention any names but you, Charlie Hurst, have been .... blah, blah, blah ... etc."

Why don't you see central banks as a good thing ? What alternative are you proposing ? How would society work without a central monetary authority without us reverting to barter or local 'scrip' currencies ?

The government controls the money supply, and it should be either frozen, or if they cannot control themselves, backed by some hard asset like gold. I personally think that is not necessary, but I've never seen a government capable of controlling itself, at least not in a democracy, or any other form. Then the market controls inflation by self regulation. When the money supply is kept in check, inflation rates are automatically curbed. Central banks mucking with interest rates based on a small number of factors is micromanaging and nearly always falls apart.
