My card was rejected twice at the ATM at my bank today. I went in and found out it was locked because there had been 3 charges to my debit card that were out of any pattern. Thank goodness someone shut off the card. Here's the thing though. I have NEVER used my card as a debit or credit card, only for ATM withdrawals and I am very careful with my pin, keeping my had covered at al time. So where did they get my number??? There had to be a breach somewhere. The bank issued me a new card on the spot and turned off Debit capabilities. I still had to call the fraud line and supposedly the charges will be put back, but that will take a couple of weeks while they snail mail me paperwork. While on the phone with fraud alert another charge was posted to the account.

I had my apartment broken into twice, had a motorcycle stolen, and my wife and I had our old house broken into twice, once just reaching for what they could grab through a window. but at least they had to do physical work to do the thefts. Today anyone with a computer and a little bit of knowledge can rob you blind, and do it with bots that rob several people and places at the same time. I really don't like this brave new world we're living in.

My bank/debit card was compromised about 5+ years ago. Someone hacked into the grocery store's computer files and stole a bunch of data like that. My number was stolen (I use the card frequently at the store). The company that monitors such things notified me ASAP and a stop was put on the card and all transactions were cancelled. The person that did this hack knew what they were doing. Within a very short space of time my card was being charged from different countries overseas, this is what probably triggered the monitors. The hacker sold the numbers he was able to get, and they were put to use immediately. The charges to my card were nominal, and the bank covered them right away, so I had no loss of any funds. Biggest thing was the inconvenience of having to wait for a new card and doing without having a debit/withdrawal card at all for about a week. Good luck.

My debit card keeps getting cloned when I use the speed-pass to pay for air and vacuum at really shady gas stations.

Air costs $3 now, I don't carry that kind of change anymore cause hardly anyone wants to be paid in cash anywhere.

I keep a large baggie full of quarters in my car, just for car washes and vacs that still require coin. I know a car wash operator trying hard to stay cash only, because he said that nobody would believe how much cash they take in, and wants to keep it that way.

I had a Lowes card hacked 10 years ago after I had purchased a new freezer from Lowes and they said I had to set up one of their cards,
A couple months later a contractor in Kansas City used it twice for 3k worth of building materials.
Lowes straightened things out very quickly.

I've had my credit card that I use for internet purchases hacked a couple of times, and my Discover card hacked once, but I use those. I never use my debit card anywhere except the bank's ATM, and rarely at another banks ATM. That's why this hack puzzles me so much. I'm glad it was only for small amounts, less than $50 so far, but I still won't get that reimbursed for a couple of weeks. With my credit cards it is always put back right away, and if it turns out it wasn't fraud they will take it again later. It's never not been fraud.

Card skimmers are very sophisticated these days. I only use the ATMs at the Bank and look around for anything that looks unusual.

There will no problem getting your funds back in your possession. The last thing any bank wants is for the public to know about a simple breach. In my early days with Visa [Chargex] I used my card to pay for a Budget Truck rental in this area. A few days later I got charged for an airline ticket from Seattle to Anchorage ,Ak. They sent me a copy of the ticket where the user actually included his address which was within a couple of blocks of the Truck rental. I wrote back and explained this along with the fact that his name was in the telephone directory under this address. I think somebody found these old slips in the garbage can behind the shop. There was no return letter of explanation but the money was back in my account a few days later.

^^^This all day long. Skimmers can be placed pretty much anywhere quickly and quietly. Also, with the new tap cards it's easy for a tech savvy person to get your information simply by walking past you. We use chip cards where I work for computer access and when they issue them to us we get a nice little foil sleeve to put them in, chip at the bottom, to help avoid a drive-by skimmer.

If anything goes wrong my bank or store straightens things out quickly with no harm to me.

Is there any way ordinary banjo-players can get those foil sleeves??

.... dunno whether these would do the trick:  https://www.amazon.ca/Protector-Aluminum-Anti-Scan-Security-Protection/dp/B08GJ5WVTY

.... or just a piece of foil cut/folded over to fit in a wallet.

... or is there more to it?

It's not so much the harm, but rather the hassle of having to cancel your card, then wait for them to send you a new one.  I always keep a little cash, but if you have no cash or card, then it means a trip to the bank to get cash.  Pain in the rear and inconvenience, really.

The real dumb thing is why do the credit card companies keep making cards that are so easy to hack? If someone can read your card walking down the sidewalk, there's a problem with the card.

I don't see any inconvenience if I have to drive to my bank that's 20 miles away. All my other shopping as in food, hardware and gasoline are 20 miles away.

But I do fully enjoy banking on my laptop 24/7 at home.If I have no cash at home I can simply go PayPal.

I grabbed $100 cash as I was at the Wal-Mart self-checkout machine about an hour ago.

I don't know anybody who had their card scammed by somebody walking past them with a magic "number getter".

If your money is in a bank it's all guaranteed safe if you are following the rules.
I worry for people playing with bitcoin and all that stuff.Looks like folks trying to hide their money.

Bubba: "Yes Owen! I think you need the full on tinfoil hat! surprise"

I'm guessing the ^^ advice is based on personal experience.   Is the hat to keep the valuable info in or keep contaminants out?

I hadn't considered keeping credit/debit cards in a colander, but ... ????

Your not-cooking-at-the-time microwave oven will protect your phone (ie. make a Faraday cage). I suppose plastic money cards would also be protected from airwaves hacking. I'd put a "Remove electronics stuff before using oven" tag on the oven door so you don't fry what you are trying to protect. This does not solve the walking-around-with-cards problem, but would solve the drive-by-hacking problem. You can test this by trying to call your phone once it's in the microwave (which I have done).

It takes more than one layer of aluminum foil wrapped around your device to protect it from hacking when you are out and about. You could find out how many layers are needed by wrapping phone and then trying to call it.  Three layers of foil protected my phone, for instance. A friendly cashier might let you test your wrapped card in his reader if there is not a line waiting to check out.

NRA had a sale on hacking-safe wallets and card holders couple years ago; I bet you could find someone to sell you a similar product. NRA still sells RFID wallets:
nrastore.com/departments/nra-b...-wallet-1

btw I"m not pushing NRA, since I'm pretty disgusted by their misuse of member's donations.

Hope this helps.
