Rocks, trees, soup spoons, blocks of urinal cakes.... EVERYTHING.
But unless we can effectively communicate between them and us, what difference does it really make?
As one of my many brothers said about this:
OK, so it has a name! "Panpsychism", glad to know it. I sort of think along those lines, not exactly their take on it, but when I read ---"Consciousness is a fundamental feature of physical matter; every single particle in existence has an “unimaginably simple” form of consciousness", well, I suppose that this is one of my "Chosen Beliefs." I would have used the term "awareness" rather than "consciousness" but it's a non-mystical belief where a type of awareness is simply a characteristic of matter, as intrinsic and natural as gravity. Although gravity is pretty spooky itself!
When we actually figure out the physical basis of consciousness I'd be surprised if it's based on physics that isn't also behind the behaviour, reactions and physical properties of things we don't consider to be conscious. Maybe even spoons. Of course we'd need an unambiguous definition of consciousness first. Anybody got one ?

Sounds too much lie having tea and no tea. Are we sure this wasn't written by the late Douglas Adams?

Does animism include stuff that isn't animals, and isn't animated?
Rocks & clocks & urinal blocks?
Oh, wait!
Now that I think of it, with MY consciousness, I do remember seeing at least ONE animated clock.

And you worshipped at the porcelain throne?

Yes. Animism comes from the Latin anima (spirit or soul)'. Weren't you lisrening in those Latin lessons ?

Originally posted by DC5Wow, my spoons aid in feeding me and not only do I not pay them, but I bought them on the open market. Does that make me a slave holder?
Don't forget that after you use them, you waterboard them. That makes you a torturous slave owner.

SEVEN SEMESTERS of Latin, and all I remember is
"UTINAM OMNE PENDATUR!"
(Let it all hang out!)
Which is apparently the advice Michelangelo took, when carving the statue of David.
IF some being or thing has the attribute of "consciousness" is it a 100%, 24/7, 365 deal or can it come and go?
'Way back, when someone shooting hoops or playing pick-up basketball would make/fluke a shot/play he didn't typically make, he'd sometimes get accused of being "unconscious."
Could this apply equally to spoons? [Inquiring minds want to know.]

But what do I know? Maybe the spoons heard me coming and just played dead when the drawer was open?
Our cat wasn’t saying anything.
Hey diddle diddle…
Seems as though the spoons wee spooning.

Originally posted by mike gregoryIF urinal blocks are conscious, how will we avoid seeming to show disrespect? ...
Nope, you weren't showing disrespect. You were helping them to fulfill their purpose in life.

Now I'm never going to be able to look at the fork compartment in the same way again.

What was the fork’s response when the spoon suggest they spoon?
I dunno. Fork off?
