I won this one at an auction, I noticed it has a benary tailpiece, but is lacking the metal plate and any identifying mark as being a "celebrated benary". Any idea on the maker? kind of looks like the fanciest buckbee I've seen, but also, does not.

I've seen that style hardware in a C Bruno and Sons catalogue.

Just a Buckbee if there is no other name. They often made nearly exact copies or nearly exact copies of banjos that they made for others, like Celebrated Benary, Dobson, Morrison, etc. Yours has the peg head shape of my Celebrated Benary, and the tension hoop style that they used on the higher end Dobson Victor models. So definitely a Buckbee. Cool banjo, should sound great when all set up! I Love that tail piece. If you decide to use something different I have a Celebrated Benary pony banjo that would love to have it’s original tailpiece!!
