Hi Everyone,

Just a quick heads up to let you know that today we changed how logins work across all Hangouts.

In the past, you logged in with your username and password. Starting today, you will log in with your account email address and password.

We made this change for a few reasons:

  1. People often forget their Hangout username, but generally can remember their email address.
  2. People often try to log in with their email address, not their username, because that's the norm nowadays.
  3. We've seen an uptick in hackers trying to get into accounts by entering known usernames (from the forum, etc) and guessing passwords. Requiring entry a private email (we don't display your email address anywhere on the site) instead of a public username makes it much tougher to get into someone else's account.
  4. People don't always realize their account is tied to an old/defunk email address. So this change has the side benefit of ensuring people know which email is in use!

Please post below if you run into any problems, etc.

Yes, we didn't want to force everyone to log out and back in. But if your login session expires or your purposely log out, you'll only be able to log in using your email.

I had killed my browsing history and after firing up the Hangout it wanted me to log in. When saving my new info , I got an error message "passwords do not match." Took about a minute before it dawned on me that the "re-enter password" was blank - no wonder it didn't match.

Re-tying it in took care of it in a flash, all's well again smiley
