Hi all! I'm a long time player but still think of myself as an advanced beginner. I play alone for my own entertainment, especially since Covid cut back group jams. I have a few books of tab but very few tunes are in modal/sawmill. I love the sound and would like to add a tune or 2 to my "repertoire" as it is.
Any suggestions for favorites, ideally in the Hangout's tab library?
Thanks in advance

Eric, I have created a "Banjo tunes with linked tabs" playlist on my YouTube channel. These are videos of me playing various tunes, mostly in clawhammer and 2F styles, with a link provided to an associated tab stored here on the BHO. Some of the modal tunes I can think of right off that are in my playlist are Gospel Plow, Mace Bell's Civil War March, Pretty Polly, Boll Weevil and Lonesome John. Hope you get some use out of this.
Here a link to the playlist:youtube.com/watch?v=SDy69TvzHK...ehR_oXhRn

I would suggest doing an advanced tab search as thisoldman did, but only check the tuning (gDGCD) and skip the other qualifiers. The reason is that not every member who has posted a tab has checked all of those qualifiers. So for example, there are two examples of 28th of January in the archive that shows in the broader search, not just one, and there is a tab for Abe's Retreat (a tune you will want to learn) posted by David Payne, that doesn't appear on the old man's search list. You might have to skim past a few three finger tabs, etc., but you won't miss very many of the sawmill tunes, just ones where the posters have failed to note the tuning, and I don't think there are very many of those.
Okay, here are the results of the broader search.

Originally posted by splungeThanks everyone! I in fact did a search of the tab library but most old time tunes are not familiar to me, so I was looking for suggestions of popular, standard or personal favorite tunes to learn.
In June, 1984, I had a tab entitled "Some Variants on a Well Known Tune, Cluck Old Hen" published in the Banjo NewsLetter. If you've an interest in this tab, please let me know and I'll upload it to Banjo Hangout.
Here is a tentative suggestion. Since you're looking for popular/standard/personal favorites, check Michael Miles repertoire for modal tunes. Michael has one of the widest ranges of tunes played in clawhammer style. On BHO and among us, trad fiddle tunes predominate (as in the excellent suggestions that have been given) but they may not suit your tastes and nothing wrong with that.

I was thinking of Lonesome John, a John Salyer tune. I think Ducks on the Pond is another modal tune.
Carl, I know 1 version of Cluck Old Hen and I'd love tosee what you collected!
I'll cehck out Gospel Plow, Mace Bell's Civil War March, Pretty Polly, Boll Weevil and Lonesome John, This Old Man's search, Abe's Retreat, Texas, Janet's and Michael's sites, Lonesome John (again!) and Ducks.
I got a lot to learn!
Thanks all!

Maybe my 2 favourite modal (G or S depending on who you are playing with and where you put the capo) are Sally in The Garden, which is one of the few tunes I managed to decipher from the John Burke book, and Shakin down the Acorns, which I got from Dwight Diller.
I play Cluck Old Hen out of open G not modal G - Again from Dwight.
My favourites in sawmill are Little Sadie and Matty Groves/Shady Grove, both of which I think I learned with the help of David Brooks' tab from BHO tab library (been playing my version of Little Sadie for some time so my have an inaccurate recollection, but definitely got started on Matty Groves from Mr Brooks Shady Grove tab)
