So the government doesn't seem too worried but it is an intruding spy balloon. From what I can see it's a balloon that simply goes with the wind. China claims that it is a weather balloon that got lost. Weather balloons typically are attached with a long string as I remember. I can't see any propellers or jets but I may be wrong. If the air force shoots it down the Chinese could probably take that as an excuse to shoot down any off- course American aircraft full of tourists. I don't mean to get political but maybe I'm just in a snitty mood.
They don't want to shoot it down over populated areas.
The payload it carries is approximately the size of a couple of school buses.

Of note, the Japanese used incendiary "balloon bombs" during WW 2.
One killed 6 people, 5 of them children, in Oregon on May 5th, 1945.

If you have to figure out what their intent was/is then you must have been living under a rock for last three years. Flying military aircraft into other countries airspace seems provoking. They are testing our leaderships resolve.
The report that I heard didn't include the actual size or cargo of the balloon. There is a lot of talking still going on. If the balloon drops into the ocean they will likely loose everything. It may 'accidentally' [wink-wink] fall down on the Utah Salt Flats or the badlands of West Texas but the balloon seems to be following a climatic jet stream. It would be a bonus to find out what they are carrying. I've assumed that weather balloons and weather ships disappeared when the satellites became popular.
I heard a report that it drifted over Montana. Not wanting to shoot it down over populated areas has me humming Merle Haggard's Big City ["Turn me loose, set me free, somewhere in the middle of Montana..."] off-and-on today.
