What happened to making cows the old tried and true method. It’s not that hard to do. Get a girl cow and a guy cow together and let nature take its course.

The reason is stated in the article...

The Global Times article said only a very small number of Chinese dairy cows are highly productive, only five in 10,000, and the cloning efforts could massively increase the country's dairy production.

Pretty soon they'll be cloning just the udders to produce milk. You wait.

Already got petri dish meat. Yum.

IF they KNOW that 5 in 10000 are highly productive why not just take those 5 and use them in a breeding program. Seems to me a whole lot of work to come up with something nature can already do.

Also nearly guarantees that eventually the whole herd will be wiped out by a disease that all of these genetically identical cows are susceptible to,

No guarantees in hybridization, but there is in cloning.

I always thought that Asians in general are more predisposed to lactose intolerance than Europeans.

Cloning has the advantage in that using surrogate cows, we can produce a thousand genetic cloned hyper-cows in one year. None of this breed and wait, breed and wait as has been done so many times in the past.

In fact, it's now common practice in agriculture for such things as grapes and apples. If I want to plant a new vineyard, I can get any number of cloned vines on any date that I specify for next spring. Lots of home efforts are no more or less than starting cuttings.

I would do my spring pruning then select the best-of-the-best grape vine cuttings and start them to sell in late July. Certainly fewer than 400 but still a lot of fun visiting growers in the Friday Farmer's Market.

Lactose intolerance is the norm. Lactose tolerance occurs in people descended from Northern Europeans and a few areas of Africa.

With Dolly the sheep and now cows!

Actually the whole industry of cloning was set up specifically for the task of cloning the most productive production animals. They only faced problems so far because for unknown reasons the cloned individuals developed health problems the "parent" didn't have. Perhaps they have overcome these problems by now.

Of course, the whole thing is totally nuts because genetically identical animals will increase the probability of some disease killing all of them at once. But industrial livestock farming is crazy anyway.

There's a Chinese reconnaissance balloon hovering over Montana bringing in bounteous bovine data at this very moment.

I think I figured the balloon thing out. Apparently someone in China is obsessed with the series Yellowstone and wanted to get a head start on the up coming episodes. Them China folks funny people they are. OK where's the sarcasm font when you need it?

the mission is pretty simplistic in that the Chinese are not very good at cowboying so they think Yellowstone is a documentary.
