This  appeared on my Facebook feed. I figured it to be "click bait" so thought it better to ask the 120,000 spare brains [thanks Mike G.] on BHO:

"Two cities in the U.S. share the same name. They are the largest cities by population in their respective states, but neither is a state capital.  What are the cities?"

My first thought was it's likely to be from relatively low population density states... which led to thinking [capitals] Helena, MT. and Pierre, S.D. which led to Sioux Falls... or is it Sioux City? ... S.D. or Iowa?

I give up .... and defer to more knowledgeable folks.

Thanks Mr. Ranch ...  sure beats trial and error via Google.  yes

...and now for some important thread drift, how come Americans [the ones I've heard] pronounce Hel-leena as Helen-uh and Pee-air as Peer?   cheeky

I would have guessed Kansas City, MO and Kansas City, KS.

Chuck, since Mr. Ranch likes looking at maps and satellite photos, I'm gonna defer* to his expertise... though IF forced to guess, I figure it must be somewhere in the N.E. .... Vermont?

* = and besides my wife has just called me for some lasagna and coleslaw. yes

Edit: as my supper cools... Hawaii or Alaska as "inter" means between???

Seems I didn't cheat hard enough.    Do the interstates in the northern part of Delaware that  essentially run NE/SW count as N/S or as E/W?  Given the state's distances N-to-S and E-to-W, it seems to me they would be generally seen as E/W highways??

I-95 is a north-south Interstate,, many shift direction here and there. Take CT fer instance,, or I-94 through Wisconsin and Illinois. . Odd numbered Interstaes run north-south,, even numbered run east-west.
Owen,,, one/1 question - which Interstates did you take back when you snowbirded to your shack in the Everglades?

Mostly we flew [to Tampa]. On the one specific trip I/we recall [towing the trike so I'd have something to do in FL] we avoided the interstates when we could.  On the way down we cut across Iowa, Kentucky, Tennessee, etc., and on the way back skirted the Gulf of Mexico thru FL, AL, 'til we got into LA, and/or MS then a bit of an angle 'til we came to #83 in Texas and stayed on that [Pine to Palm Hwy. ?]  all the way back to Russell.

One of the secondary highways somewhere in Texas sticks in my mind .... 1 lane each way, big ol' trees with branches virtually touching overhead..... and 75 MPH speed limit.

Edit: Unlike a lot of the others, we took our time coming/going looking on it as part of the holiday.  No use rushing to get to FL so we could sit in the air-conditioned trailer waiting for the day to cool down enough so we could enjoy the outdoors.  [But, but, but, that was only about half the days, the other half were fine.]

Fun fact all even number Interstates run from the west to the east and all odd Interstates run south to north.
There mile markers are arranged that way as well.
They were that way when I was traveling.

Of course there’s I-44, once Route 66. It’s even, I guess, because it cove more E-W miles than N-S.?

Mostly in an east-west trajectory, Bill, from St. Louis to Oklahoma City. The old Route 66 in Illinois was mostly replaced by I-55.

Maybe by 150 miles or so once you add the final stretch from OKC to Wichita Falls, which is more N-S.
