That reminds me of a funny story. A good friend, when he was in college, heard about how you could buy chicken chicks for about $.50 a piece and a poultry company would provide the feed, let you raise them, and pay you $1.50 for them when they were mature. One of his friends father was a banker so they went to see him about getting a $5,000 loan. The banker said he thought that was a great idea and one of his friends had done that very same thing. He went on to tell them that one summer day when it got into the high 90's a power outage caused the fans in the sheds to go off. The next morning the man went to feed the chickens and found 5,000 dead chickens. He then asked if they still wanted to borrow the money. Uhhhhhhh...... No!

But seriously, sorry for your neighbors loss.
John, your tale ^^ reminds me of one that I heard* about.
Although it's no longer a major player, for many decades starting in the 30s, Churchill, MB. was a significant port for western Canadian grain being exported to Europe.
'Way back a dude apparently got the idea that he could bring in weanling pigs, feed them c-h-e-a-p grain screenings [i.e. little or no value to the grain companies] , butcher them and sell the meat locally [no added freight on that part of the grocery bill] and realize a decent profit. So he built the barn and got things operating. Alas, he built it to southern standards [plywood over a 2X4 framing] and a couple of polar bears ripped a corner open and ate up his "profits."
* = It's too good a tale to be not true, so I've made no effort to verify/refute it.

We have weasels around here. Neighbour over the trail had 25 chickens. Weasel wiped out 23 of them in one go!
Poultry farmers are having a bad time out here with the Avian Flu.
