Where do you draw the line on food prices???
I don’t eat a lot of fast food (other than venison) , but I do like my Big Mac and my Taco Bell on occasion!!!
Well, I find out this week that McDonald’s brought back my beloved breakfast sandwich………The Steak,Egg&Cheese Bagel !!! Thank you Baby Jesus !!!
So in my euphoric anticipation, yesterday I decided that instead of heating up a breakfast sammich on da Mr. Heater in my ice shack, I will treat myself to my beloved , long lost favorite breakfast sandwich of all time. So at 6:30 am I’m in line at McDonald’s and I order my sandwich. I didn’t want the meal, just the sandwich.
Upon placing my order, the gal in the speaker tells me “ that will be $8.23 and you can pull up to the first window”. I explained to her that I just wanted the sammich and not the meal. She replied “ that’s is just the cost of the sandwich “ .
I had my heart set on this delicious culinary achievement that can’t be replicated at home, so I opened the lock on my wallet and scrounged for spare change in the console’s nooks and crannies and paid the $8.23. Then I had to pull forward to the waiting area as it will just be a minute as they had to make my steak. 13 minutes later it was brought out to me and although the steak was warm, the rest of the sandwich was ice cold !!! Yes I ate it and it was delicious, but as much as I love that sammich, I just can’t justify $8.23 for a damn McDonald’s sammich any more. I refuse to do it. Granted I did feel a little better and blew coffee out my nose when my fishin buddy behind me told me he got the sandwich meal and upgraded to an iced coffee and his total was $13.68.
When do you draw the line and JUST SAY NO !!!
Slammer!!!
I don’t believe I’m cheap……frugal maybe……or maybe I just know the value of a dollar in terms of the work I did to get it. But I see soooooooooo many people that don’t bat an eye over stuff like this and just pay the price and except it and do it every day. I did it as a treat to myself!!! I think maybe too is that I’m old school and pay for a lot of things in cash and physically see the money transfer hands and not just handing someone a card and then wondering how to pay for it at the end of the month!!! Oh Jeez, am I becoming my parents???
Slammer!!!
She replied “ that’s is just the cost of the sandwich “ .
We don't have any hard-and-fast rules, so I can't really answer your question, but ^^ reminds me of 1974 when I moved from MB [beer $3.05 a dozen] to NWT. Heading out from the bar on my first nite I decided to get "a dozen Canadian, please." The dude sets it on the counter and says "$6.00 please." Me [without looking closely]: "Oh, I just want a dozen, not a 24." He: "That is a dozen."
Fwiw, $6 wasn't at my threshold for saying "No!"
[Gross pay was up by a factor of >1.5, so there was an upside. And speaking of upside, not many days after ^^ I met my soon-enough-to-be-and-still wife. ]
I've been saying NO a lot lately. I pass over what used to be regular purchases because I just can't justify the cost anymore. I gave up on McDonald's and most all fast food in 2020 when the trend towards higher prices, even lower than expected quality, and rude to nonexistent service became widespread. I can go to a local diner and get a first class cheeseburger meal served hot by a smiling waitress for about what Burger King charges to toss you stale cold food in a bag at the drive-thru.
I had to fast for some blood tests & went way past lunchtime & was hungry on my way home. I decided to stop a Scrawny Ronnies as I hadn't been there in 20 years!
I went in to sit down & check it out. There was one other person eating in. I ordered a Big Mac. fries & a drink. I thought it was expensive but what the heck. There was a giant picture of a Big Mac over the cash.
The guy said he'd bring it out to me. He dropped it off & I opened the big box. I thought I was using my inside voice & said " What a freaking Joke!' The guy circled back & asked asked if there was a problem.
I picked the burger up between my thumb & forefinger & started laughing. He just thought I was crazy & kept going! Remember when BIG & WHOPPER meant really large?!
I'm going to try & go another 20 years!
It's somewhat cheaper to fix the food you like at home, rather than going to a fast food joint that probably serves food that's not fit for human consumption (just my opinion, not meant to be actual fact).
If you like French fries, peel a potato, cut it up in strips and fry it at home. One potato cost maybe 20 to 30 cents and a couple of tablespoons of oil maybe 10 to 20 cents. So for, let's say 50 cents you can have a real potato, cooked in decent, clean oil and fairly healthy for much less than you can buy a side of fries at a fast foot place.
Same goes for hamburgers, fried fish, fried chicken, etc. Make it at home, it's cheaper and better.
Instead of purchasing frozen stuff, get ingredients that are fresh, make them at home. Quicker, better for you and healthier, too.
We have traded some fast food to local sit-down cafes. We can get better food at about same price as McD's or Wendys which is our favorite. These prices are not going to go down. It does't work that way in fast food. Grocery stores will drop eventually. Competiton will have to lower prices. Eggs and milk always very and government subsidies or lack of always effect the market. Milk and cheese always go up in fall of year because of schools starting. Regulations are hurting the farmers, congress ought to come and work on a farm, they change their tune. Sorry for getting political.

This happens in high end restaurants also. I too have seen it, which is one reason I usually buy beer in bottles, not glasses.
Edit to add: I was once working at the service bar in a very nice restaurant. I mixed a drink for a customer and when the waitress came to pick it up her lighting angle allowed her to see a dead cockroach in the glass that I could not see. She spooned it out and served the drink to the customer. When telling the story to a manger he said "good for you."

Buffets are the worst. I worked at a very popular national chain thats related in name to livestock pens. I cant believe their customers didnt die daily, although they did have two or three e coli complaints a week.
And yes, Ive seen really bad mixed drink behavior like was mentioned, only drink bottles!

But you'll have the money in your pocket to pay for it, rather than having it stealthily removed each week.

More than half my eggs come from local sources. Lots of stands around here, and I have many friends that give me a dozen every now and then, but the chickens stop laying once the cold weather kicks in. If the prices stay high I probably won't get any eggs until spring when they start laying again. One of my sources lost his flock to a dog or coyote attack. He never rebuilt.
One of the major problems around here is getting and keeping staff. Tim Horton's is Canada's flagship coffee and donut shop [believe it or not]. 10th Avenue near the University is an affluent neighbourhood. The only employees they could get were students right off the boat. None of the local kids or adults wanted to work for chump change. The new kids couldn't understand enough English to avoid continual mistakes. A year ago the branch closed for good. Other fast food companies are suffering a similar fate. By the time I get to any counter to order anything I naturally assume that I have to repeat most of what I have just said. Super Markets and other variety stores seem to be existing on a skeleton crew. This can really take the remaining enjoyment out of any kind of shopping.
