Thumbpick Face-Off: Propik Super-Tone vs. BlueChip

As many of you know, Propik introduced a premium thumb pick 6 mos. ago, they call it the “Super-Tone.” The blade is made of high tech composite, PEEK. (Pick sells for $35.)

Obviously, it’s a contender for the BlueChip market.

The BlueChip is the premium pick today, enjoying widespread adoption for years now; the blade is made of high tech composite, Vespel. (Pick sells for around $40.)

** So what say y’all about the tone and playability of these two compared to each other? **

I know some of you BlueChippers have tried out a Super-Tone by now and can give us a good comparison and your premium analysis :) .

Which composite produces better tone? (Please tell us if you’re generally more interested in Scruggs style/tone or Bela style/tone.)

The face off is on…

It will be interesting to see what people think. PEEK is a very different material than what Bluechip uses. My understanding is the Bluechip material is trying to be similar to the old tortoise shell picks. PEEK has more in common with metal finger picks than plastic thumb picks. It is an interesting material.

Well, I’m surprised there are no posts .. yet .. from those who have tried, or put both, picks through the paces.. :(

Hey, we’d love to hear from you if you’ve played both!!

I have propiks delrin thumbpick. I love it since I can seemlessly switch between flatpicking and fingerpicking. It is built well. I also use it on the banjo. Delrin and PEEK have been around for a long time. Pretty much the same aside from PEEK is a thermal material, but perhaps acoustically do different since PEEK wears more slowly. Both are fairly RF transparent and make for good circuit card stock...if that matters lol.

I think propik has a defense industry MechE owner be my guess!

I prefer the sound of a metal pick on my banjo but like the delrin on acoustic guitar.
