had to be euthanized yesterday She had not eaten and hardly drunk for 5 days; an ultrasound indicated she had advanced intestinal lymphoma, She was 13, and had lived with lupus and diabetes for 4 years, never complaining about the insulin shots and many vet trips. My late wife Jean and I brought her in from the street about 11 years ago; she was the last cat we had together. I miss her, but she suffers no more.
Bill, I’m really sorry to hear that. Always a great loss to lose an animal companion. At least I’m sure you have many happy memories, and the knowledge that you did right by her when she needed your help.
This is very dark news to read. So often, cats become something more than just a "pet" roaming around the house. I hope that some day, you find a way to bring another companion animal into your home.
I've just bought a T.S. Eliot's book of 15 poems: "Old Possum's Book Of Practical Cats." Better descriptions of what cats really are.
Congratulations to the cat for picking the best home on the street 11 years ago. Being a good pet owner often requires that awful decision toward the end. We've had to do it about 4 times and it doesn't get any easier.
I'll add my condolences to the others. It's tough having to euthanize a beloved pet, but it is the right thing to do when there's no hope for any quality of life left for the animal. Your cat is now pain free and you're the one who's hurt.
One of my lady friends just had to euthanize her cat, one she'd had for 13 years because the cat had cancer. It was the first time she'd had to put a pet down and she was devastated. I offered to take the cat for her, but she said it was her cat, her decision, her duty to stay with her until the end.
Thanks to all of you for your kind words and thoughtful comments. I continue with Molly, a “temporary” foster from a shelter who has now been here almost five years. So it is with cats.
Sorry to hear your sad news Bill. I've had to do that for our previous pet cat to prevent her unnecessary pain and suffering. Even then that was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. The loss hurts terribly.
so sorry, think I am facing that with my dog, I would guess about 14 and I need to take her to the vet and ask some questions but think its about time. she had a tia about 3 weeks and got my mind made up then and set a date and she rallied that day and has been doing well but she's just not right. have to go through it again I guess and I know my 3 cats are older as they didn't like her when I brought that little puppy home, and my horses are in their late 20, this old lady is facing some sad times I think
Sorry for your loss, Bill. It's a very hard thing. I'm facing a similar ailment -- intestinal lymphoma -- with my kitty of many years. For now, she's doing okay with steroids and seems pretty healthy, but it will devolve at some point.
Sitting here in the vets office at 8:45 pm typing this and realizing that like you Bill and others I have to make the call. My cat of 18 years is in kidney failure and the vet thinks he may have a tumor. Blood count way off as is the kidney function. 18 years with the same cat wow no more cats
