Don't know if this is the appropriate forum (mods move if necessary) but I got Tefview to be able to read tabs written with TabEdit (tef format) and I have one complaint with it.

When I open a tab and then close it and reopen it, tefview wont save my settings--if I change the metronome speed, for instance, or eliminate the guitar part, or opt for page view, next time I open the same tab everything is back to the way it was originally (perhaps the way it was written by the person who arranged the tune). There is no option to save the settings. It's annoying as heck.

Is there any remedy for this short of buying the whole tabEdit program?

Seems to be like I've changed the speed and other things, but I'm not sure how I did it and I don't have Tabledit (Tefview) on my computer.
Hopefully someone else will be able to answer your questions before I get to my laptop.

I'll move this to the tab forum where there is a discussion about Tabledit and the editor/author checks in sometimes.

TefView is a view-only program. You can download the TablEdit trial version which limits the number of measures you can create (16?). That may let you make changes to the tef files. If later you want to purchase the software, you will then get a key to unlock the trial version on your computer.

There are many folks more knowledgeable than I am about these products, so there may be another solution you will get from one of them.

AS already said: TefView is a tab reader and you cannot save any changes. You must have the full TablEdit program (US$ 60 I think)  to be able to save settings, and make and save other changes to the tab.

It is $60.00 and that’s a one time purchase including future updates (I think). It’s worth the investment. There’s someone on Amazon selling a guidebook but I don’t know how good it is. Perhaps someone can comment.

You could email the tef file to a good friend who owns the Tabledit program and he or she could open it in Tabledit, set the file up the way you want it, save it, and email it back to you.

Tefview is designed to let people see tabs, that others have written, for free and it's advertised and promoted as such. For you to complain that It will not let you edit, nor customize, tabs to other specs than its originally intended purpose, is, well, hmmm, uhhh, disappointing...

But that's a misinterpretation of what I said.

I just want to save the preferences that the program itself offers me. I want to be able to change the metronome settings, view, etc., so that the next time I open up the very same piece of music I don't have to go through all the settings again.

If the program doesn't want you to change those settings, why offer an option to change them, at all?

Tefview is just a viewing program.  Although it will allow you to make changes, you cannot save them as this would be considered TAB editing and not viewing.

What you want is the free trial version of Tabledit. This will allow you to create and edit tabs with some limitations, however if you just want to save metronome settings, etc, it will let you do that.

You downloaded the wrong program for your needs.
