Tyler mentioned it not sounding good in the open position.Makes one doubt the nut.
It could be several things. Bridge, nut, neck warpage, etc.. None of these problems should require expensive maintance work. A competent repairperson should be able to identify and correct these problems.
If frets need "dressing" it will cost you more than the things I mentioned in the previous paragraph. If fretwork is needed, be ABSOLUTE/150% sure the work is done by a competent luthier.
