These type of banjos are popular with the aristocracy collectors. The price is no surprise to me.
I can think of a few people who would be motivated to have it, and it only takes two to run the price up.
Outside of that circle of a few people, I doubt there would be much of a market at this price point.

Occasionally sales like this are also driven by some spill-over from early American folk art/craft collector circles... folks who are interested more in it's construction and decoration, and may not actually care that it's a banjo.
