Absolutely. If you don't have a filter, you may not have any friends left. Or you say everything on your mind and still have friends, it will be a true friendship.

As a somewhat general  guideline (?), I figure that most jerks/bozos/etc. already know full-well that they're jerks/bozos/etc., so my telling 'em probably won't improve things.

...or as my mammy used to say, " You might as well save your breath to blow your porridge."

That ^^ mindset/outlook seems to be moving along lock-step with my age.

If I don't do that at least three times per day something is wrong.

It's according to who it is, what they say and how I feel.

As a general rule, I try to keep my mouth shut because I get tired of sticking my foot in it.

Rich nailed it ....... if you want to keep old friends and make new ones you have to have a filter.

Ralphie May had a funny routine about "you can be right or you can be happy". So true...

I don't have things that I refrain from saying...I just speak my mind as do my friends.
I've been in the same band since 1977 and still have all the friends and relatives I've had all my life.
I hang around with good people who I trust and who trust me.We allow each other great freedom of expression and value the depth of our friendship.

Just be honest with each other. If you think someone may take what you say the wrong way maybe you should first reexamine what you say.

I believe anyone who says they don't, at least sometimes, hold back stating their true thoughts is full of crap.

There, I said it.

^^ To some extent.  I've been mulling it over, and see two distinct scenarios, although the OP doesn't make the distinction.... saying something about the person being being spoken to, and/or speaking about things in general.  I'll exercise more restraint in the former than the latter. In fact in the second scenario, I sometimes  reflect that I'd be better off "holding back"... saying less and asking/listening more.*  [But, but, but, I'm working on it .. or at least I hope to ... someday.  wink ]

* = I just had one such event a couple of days ago ... a conversation with an Ottawa police officer.  I was pretty clear w.r.t. my take on the "truckers' convoy" and how it was [mis]handled, but didn't put enough effort into finding out her position and the rationale behind it.

Only in their dreams.

Actually, I have been working on tact. To me, "tact" is the ability of being truthful without deserving a slap in the face.

Actually, the older I get, the more likely I am to say my truth. I make sure that I speak from my heart, and not to be rude or blatantly hurtful. I might have it perfected by the time the grass begins to grow over my body.

Sometimes. I will try it right now. What is this STUD name you’re going by now? I like Figmo better!

I try to be as real as I can, except at work…I really have to watch what I say or I’d be terminated.

I know I’m capable of — and maybe harbor a real talent for — being kind of an azzhole. I can be argumentative and domineeringly opinionated. Overly critical of the little things while overlooking an admirable bigger picture. Not spiteful dooshbaggery, just… kind of an axxhole.

So I’ve continued (to try) to apply the ol’ filter and be my best me.

And turns out my best me is still kind of... well, you know.
