Hi Folks,

Sometime ago, I purchased an Epiphone Recording banjo, missing it's resonator and sustaining quite a bit of damage. This forum was an excellent source of info on this instrument and you can review that post in the archives at this link: banjohangout.org/archive/379616.

I thought folks might enjoy hearing, as Paul Harvey used to say, "The rest of the story" about this unique banjo.

While I had a solid offer to put it up for sale on consignment at a well known vintage shop in as is condition, a hectic schedule, a lack of follow up from the store and the nagging desire to restore this myself meant that it's still in the basement awaiting restoration.

I had simply decided to do what I could and restore it to playing condition without the resonator. I had made inquiries about locating a correct vintage resonator, but was universally told that there was little or no chance of ever locating one. Well about a week ago, Gryphon Guitars put that very item up for sale as an Ebay Auction. I am delighted to say that I was able to win it and will soon have it here. I'll be working on a full restoration over this winter and will undoubtedly post updates and ask for additional advice as I move the process forward.

Congrats!!!! I saw the resonator and thought, hmmm, that might be worth bidding on. I am glad I didn't and that a Hangout member just completed a banjo with it.

Edit, lol I just read my comment on your linked posts.  I remember that one now.

Thanks for not bidding! I'm amazed that I was able to locate this part and look forward to bringing this incredible instrument back to life. I'll post updates as I progress. Out of curiosity, does anyone have a suggestion for a replacement head? I haven't pulled it out in some time, but my recollections is that it is a skin head. I do recall it is damaged and needs to be replaced. My gut says stay way from a clear, modern head and either try to replace the skin head or look for a modern equivalent.

Bob Smakula sell heads of all kinds. I have some beautiful white thin vellums from him.

I have a box full of old heads that I'm planning to list and sell.  I'll take a look and see if I have an old skin head that would work for you.  It should be 10-15/16.
