Hi everyone,

Can you switch out the buttons only on your tuners? Or do you have to replace the entire tuner itself?

If you can, does anyone know where I can purchase good quality black ones?

Thank you

You can switch buttons.

Would help if you could post a picture of one tuner with the button NEXT to it.

I know a guy who carved his own replacement buttons out of STONE.

But, If you can show the tuner shaft, it would be easier for some of us other OutHangers to tell you who sells that particular shape, with the proper shaft hole.

There is no one standard tuner shaft, so even though black buttons are widely available you have to be sure that what you buy will fit your tuner.

Smakula.com is a great source for buttons. He has them to fit various shafts. Bob Smakula is a member here and can help you get what you need.

Chris Sorenson at Companion Custom Banjos is another member here who makes custom buttons. Chris can make any color, size, style you need.

Although tuners might have different buttons for different shafts, a button's hole can sometimes be filed to make it fit. Small file, of course, like those sets of jeweler's files sold at Harbor Freight and other places. they are not expensive and can be used for many other things, too.

It does depend on the tuner. As stated, tuner shafts vary in size and design. Ebay lists a number of buttons (black included). Some are close and can be modified by using Jewellers files. Others not so. As Mike and Edward have said, please post photos.

I have banjo tuner knobs manufactured in grained ivoroid, tortoise color plastic, amber color plastic, and ebony wood. The different hole sizes available will fit Gotoh planet tuners (also Waverly, 5-star, and others), Gotoh 5th tuners, ABM and pre 2017 Schaller, and also some to fit post 2017 Schaller.

There are some Asian banjo tuners that have button shafts that do not conform to the standards set by Gotoh and others and a good fit is not guaranteed.  Filing or shimming may  be necessary for a good fit.
