This used to be a piece of cake. But after not doing this for over a year it now seems like all the good free options are no longer listed. Download.com USED to have the goods, but the best one now all seem to have a watermark... and Im not going to advertise their products when they don't even work.

Anyone have a good source?
Thanks.

Thank you. I have been having trouble with a lot of free software for this. I have You Tube Premium and it allows downloading, but AT REDUCED QUALITY. At this very moment I'm ripping a video via VLC Media player, but after 30 minutes it is still working. VLC may work though, ' too early to say. Im on You Tube searching for help videos on this matter.

yt-dlp is the current best in class, IMO.

I'm not sure if it has a pretty pointy-clicky interface in the windows version, though.

Thank you. This used to be a cakewalk. I'm almost ready to give up on VLC ripping it correctly, it's not working as they say in the instructions. I'm checking out all leads.

Thanks for all the help folks! I greatly appreciate it, this has been a day long job. lol

Good news, I finally got VLC Media player to rip a MP4 of some raw video footage that somebody is giving away without any copyright. They don't make it easy though, I had to sit thru some videos on how to do this, and after about 20 clicks of my mouse I finally got a video in MP4 downloaded. This really should not be so difficult, especially when the original uploaded is giving the video away for use with audio tracks.

Ok, You think it should not be difficult to download with full video and audio fidelity. There is great pressure from the European Union on Alphabet/Google/YouTube (same company) to make it impossible because of Copyright concerns. Hundreds of millions of Euros in fines are at stake.

There are a number of apps that can get the quality very close but it is not going to be easy. By not enabling it (screen recording with digital audio capture) in the OS, both Microsoft and Apple have taken themselves out of the line of fire.  QuickTime can record the screen but uses the microphone to capture audio.

I have found exactly one decent app for the Mac, bundled with Toast. It's a simple 3-click process. Yes, I know how to use VLC but it is a royal PIA—as is everything else I've tried.

I believe you are right about the copyright stuff. Officially You Tube says that users are prevented from downloading... Then You Tube offers their Premium users a download option (lesser quality). Every time I find a simple way of doing this the program seems to disappear. I must of gone thru at least 6 different programs. For now VLC works, but one must watch the videos in order to learn how to do it.

Thanks.

When you have it down to a repeatable procedure, please do us all a favor and post a step-by-step guide for Windows.

I'll do a similar one or Mac including how to monitor the input but I won't do it with freeware. Life's too short..

I use the 4Kvideodownloader as well.

In ffmpeg I have been using yt-dlp.exe for a while, after youtube started throttling the download rate of youtube-dl.exe.

On the Mac, ClipGrab works fine for YouTube (or at least most of the videos there). It's free.

For years, I've been using two free video downloaders, not that they've worked for every video (some videos are blocked from downloading).

Foxfire  video download helper

RealPlayer
