Any ideas on a case that would be a snug fit for a 1890s SS Stewart Universal Favorite #1? Most modern cases are made for slightly larger banjos and are a bit loose. Preferably a hard case.

Many Stewarts are 10 1/2".
I don't know of an off the shelf case that size.
Cases can be custom made, but it's expensive.
I'm going to suggest an 11" open back case and hand towels.

Most S.S. Stewart Universal Favorites have 11" diameter rims and should fit in Superior brand CD-1535 (black exterior), CD-2535 (brown exterior) or a TKL  8942. I stock all 3 of those cases.

Have you done a test fit in any of these cases?

Posting dimensions of rim diameter with and without the shoes and the total length will be helpful, as the only thing consistent about vintage banjos is the inconsistency.

The rim is 11", 12" with the shoes. Total length 35.5" from tip if the peghead to the tailpiece nut.

I’ve not seen a UF that was not 11”, it is kinda what it means.
11.5= Champion
12 or 13= Orchestra
Thoroughbreds eventually came in all sizes.
