I am a full-on newbie. I purchased this Bart Reiter banjo from a local musician who had purchased it from another local musician, and so on. I have looked online to see if I could find the model and other details but haven't found anything definitive. It is an open back model but has been fitted with a resonator. Can anyone help me?

Hello, and welcome to the hangout!

I see that you have photos attached in the "media" section of your profile, but it will be best if you can attach the pictures to your original post. It’ll be easier for people to see them.

I’m not the one to help you on the identification of the banjo, but you’ve come to the right place!

Bart Reiter is a member here. His avatar name is banjobart. You could send him a PM and ask him directly. Your banjo looks pretty unique, I think he would remember making that one.

Sadly, my friend said that Bart passed away.

Hmm, I don't see where to be able to put the photos in the post. Will need to learn how to do that. I have tried all the usual ways (drag/drop, copy/paste, insert photo), but alas, no photos in the post.

I believe that your friend is mistaken.

So far as we know, Bart is alive and well.  He has closed his shop and retired.

This is wonderful to hear! I will let my friend know and my apologies for this mistaken information.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page just past "Post Quick Reply" where it says "Attachments," and click on the photos you want attached with your reply (or you can edit your original post and add them that way).

Thanks!  I had attached the photos when I posted originally but for some reason they didn't show up in the post.  Dang, I am so green.  My account got messed up and I can't log in with my original login so I can't add them there. Honestly, I can usually figure things out, but apparently not today.

I went to check Jillmg profile but it's been locked by a moderator for some reason.

In any case, a Bart Reiter with a resonator is most likely a Professional or Grand Concert from the early 90s. As far as I know, that would be the only Bart Reiter with a resonator. This is assuming it's an internal resonator originally part of the banjo, not something retrofitted.

Bart Reiter banjos have serial numbers on the dowel stick, and he has a serial number list on his website: reiterbanjos.com/serial.html. That will tell you what year it was made.

I tried again and now I see the photos. I don't think this is a Bart Reiter banjo at all.

This banjo appears to have a rosewood fretboard, I've only ever seen BR banjos with ebony fretboards and his website doesn't list any models with rosewood fretboards. The peghead design and inlay is unlike anything I've ever seen on a BR. Take the resonator off the banjo. If it's a Bart Reiter, you will find a dowel stick under the resonator and on that dowel stick you will find a plate with his name on it, and a serial number stamped into the dowel stick. If you don't see that, it's most likely not a Bart Reiter banjo. If this is a Bart Reiter, it's definitely a departure from his typical style, possibly a one-off custom.

It does have a dowel with maker plate and stamped serial number which his site shows as made in 1991. Your comments support why I have not seen any models that look like this one. I messaged Bart here and hope to hear from him!

If it has a resonator made from newsprint, it may be the rare
"PAPER-BACKED REITER"
mentioned in the Beatles' only Bluegrass album.

Looks like the resonator was added with some generic t-brackets, so just an add on from a parts stash. It'd be interesting to see inside the pot, the dowel stick and maker plate. Sorry you lost your friend.

The first Special models had a rosewood finger board. About 1990 I upgraded all models to ebony.

I thought it was rosewood! Thank you for reaching out! I'll message soon.

Bart said it is a Special model with a custom order original peghead inlay. Thank you all for your help!
