Is it necessary to have the brass square end of a stew Mac hot rod truss rod directly under the nut or can it be set back a few mm so the truss rod adjustment nut is a little closer to the nut? My stew Mac rod has a hex key which needs access for a hex tool but I have another similar rod with a 4mm Allen key adjustment, but when the brass end sits directly under the nut the adjustment sits just too far out into the neck and would hit the peghead overlay.
Yes, it can be set back enough to miss the overlay.
There is a set of "ball end" hex wrenches, that allow you angle the wrench just so. I bought mine through Harbor Freight.
