This tune exists in several different versions and several different names besides Where Did You Sleep Last Night and In The Pines (for example Black Girl, My Girl, Longest Train). Are you thinking of a certain artist or version?

Well, your request doesn't give any information about the version you are looking for, or the key, so I have made some assumptions,  Since you are looking for Scruggs style, I assume you are a bluegrass picker, and the classic bluegrass version of In the Pines was recorded by the father of bluegrass himself, Bill Monroe, with the Bluegrass Boys, in 1952.  The personnel on that recording were Bill Monroe ( vocal & mandolin), Jimmy Martin ( vocal & guitar), Sonny Osborne (banjo) , Charlie Cline (fiddle) and Ernie Newton (bass).  They do the song in the key of E.  Sonny just plays back-up on this recording, no banjo lead break.

In the Pines, Bill Monroe, 1952

i think the best way to play in E if you are in a bluegrass jam is by playing in open G (gDGBD) with the capo on the 2nd fret, but with the 5th string tuned up 4 frets, to a B.  Then you play the song based around the closed D chord position, like so:

Here is the tab:
