It's 3 a.m. and I can't sleep, and a conversation I had over a decade ago is rolling around in my brain.
A friend was livid at someone for stating an opinion she felt they didn't deserve to have because of hypocrisy. I asked if she agreed with the opinion, and she did, she just was angry that that person believed it, because having that person believe it made it less true. This made no sense to me. I honestly don't recall what topic she was angry about, I just remember what I said to try to make it better. I reframed the situation. "Okay, what about smoking? Do you believe smoking is bad for your health?" "Yes!" "Okay, so if a smoker says smoking is bad for your health..." "They're lying!"
I eventually came to realize, for her, it was who was talking, not what was being said that was important. It is not the only time I've come up against this. I was at a party once where two women went around the room saying word for word the very same thing and getting opposite reactions from the same people. The one woman was praised for her kindness and caring, and the second women was told she was stupid and selfish. Word for word, the very same thing was said.
I still scratch my head over this.
You see that all the time, even here. One person can say something and they get trounced while another person will say the same thing and not a word is said. People are less likely to jump on someone who usually agrees with them or that tends to hold the same beliefs as them. However, when someone holds different beliefs or is generally at odds with the other person regarding opinions they are an easier target.
That is why people often will attribute a quote to someone held in great esteem.
Back when Bill Cosby was a highly respected entertainer, someone was passing around a statement allegedly written by him, about controlling immigration.
It included shooting pregnant women.
Some scam artists claim that their favorite God or Goddess has revealed unto them that people should send them money, or should support some candidate.
And, of course, there are LOTS of quotes attributed to Abraham Lincoln.
My favorite:
