Hi,

Im almost finished my first mountain banjo - its looking really good.

I had some good help a few weeks ago, regarding doing the nut slots, but I forgot to ask:

How high should the top nut be (from the point of view of the fretboard/ note, this is a fretless).  How much it should protrude above the fret board?

Also, how high does the fifth string pip need to be, above the fretboard.

Thanks

Nicholas

It depends on how far above the fretboard you want the strings since thats more important than top of nut heighth. Generally you don't want the strings cradled too deep in the slots, so determined desired action height first. On my BG banjo I run my strings at nut a little higher than standard heighth because #1 it doesn't bother my playing one bit and #2 It gives me some incredible pull offs I don't get with most other banjos, so don't be afraid to go with whats comfortable to you. You don't need to glue the nut in while testing so start with a reasonable overall heighth a little higher than you think is needed, file your slots and keep taking a little off the bottom of nut until you like it. P.S. I've not worked on fretless banjos but the function of the nut has to be the same..just set a little lower. It's not difficult to figure out whats comfortable to you heighth wise.

Remember that there aren't any frets. If everything else is set up right, the strings don't have to be more than a couple thousandths off the fingerboard at the nut. Some players do prefer a higher action at the nut (as Brent says), but even then the nut is going to look oddly low to an eye that's used to fretted instruments.

I prefer the strings to sit very close to the fretboard on a fretless. In theory, it can be as low as the fretboard.

The 5th string pip I align the height so the same height as the other strings. To do this, install strings 1-4 first, then judge how much to file the pip so the 5th string height aligns with the other strings
