I was scrolling through YouTube and stumbled upon 81crowe and his dad playing Soliders Joy and immediately wanted to learn it, I saw the tab that is currently in the archive however I'm not a big fan of it to be honest, so I was wanting to learn this one specifically. Since this is in his "Cellular Sessions" series there is some talking at the beginning, the song starts 53 seconds into the video.

Note that Russ is fingerpicking. Do you want tab of his dad’s playing? — Although it’s a different version, and I don’t know about tab, Walt Koken posted SJ with a slo-mo video, so you can learn by watching.

David Brooks, is the go to clawhammer person on BHO pretty much. There are tons of talented Clawhammer players here though...they'll probably tab it out for you...Jack

Glenn plays tunes like no one else. His style is distinctive and great.

Thanks for the comments, wish I could assist with providing tab for what I played, but I don't use it or write it... My playing style evolved from playing with old friend Bob Buckingham when I was learning and Reed Martin among other influences. I use both my index and middle fingers typically. One part of any confusion with this video is that it was a practical joke Russ played on me for Father's Day. He dressed up like me, added reading glasses, and died his hair and beard grey, we kinda of look alike.. I didn't see the whole thing or realize he did that until he posted it... Glenn

By the way, I forgot to mention that our Scruggs/Clawhammer version of Soldiers Joy is loosely based on the cut on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" album, where Earl Scruggs and John McEuen played it together using both banjo styles. That might be a good cut for you to check out if you liked this version.

I see Jack has "assigned" another tab my way. I do agree with Jack that there is a lot of clawhammer talent here, and one of them may get to it before I do. (I am still catching up on my class and private lessons at the Louisville Folk School after teaching at Kentucky Music Week last week.) This is very nice version of "Soldier's Joy," and I'm sure I will learn something from it.

I think I hear some licks similar to a version by John Balch on one of his CDs. I'll take a shot at the first break Glenn takes. I may not tackle up-the-neck break. If that is what is desired, I may not be the guy.

Here's my humble submission of what I hear in Glenn's part early on in this video. Glenn probably won't recognize it since he does a lot more than I could capture here.

I have uploaded new files for Glenn Carson's "Soldier's Joy." I have added my approximation for Glenn's up-the-neck break. (Again, my tab as a whole is just an approximation of Glenn's fine playing.) The link about should still work since I have edited the entry that was there.

Thanks to Russ and Glenn for a fine version of this old standard.

David
