A recent clawhammer post of this cool old haunting tune reminded me that I worked up a Scruggs / melodic version of this tune years ago and pretty much forgot about it until that video was posted. So I was thinking about recording my version too, and went to google the title when I ran into this conundrum ...
So which title is correct for this old tune?
Growling Old Man and Grumbling Old Woman

... so who is grumbling, and who is growling?
Is there any consensus on this? As far as I can tell, they seem interchangeable...
Does it even matter?

My search results got a long list of performance titles & references to "Growling old man and Grumbling Old Woman". ( I think it's common in the folkworld for a song to have variation in the title.)

Why not just give the tune a different title, something like "Annoying People Who B**** too Much."

I learned it as Growling Old Man and Grumbling Woman, almost 50 years ago.

Cool, thanks for your post, you've confirmed the title I was leaning towards and which seems to used more often than its opposite (at least with more online references I could find).
So for this tune, men growl and women grumble. Seems about right LOL!!!

LOL!!!! I think any man who has ever been in a relationship with a woman, or married, knows very well that women have way more ammunition in their arsenal beyond grumbling, to deal with growling old men. But this is a family-oriented website ... so I'll just leave it at that :)
In my experience, the old man grumbles and the old woman growls. As to the correct song title, I have no idea.
