The TOTW for 5/27/2022 is.......Too Many Goats. Too Many Goats was written by prolific composer and Mandolin player John Goodin of the group Contratopia. Sadly, John Goodin passed away in October of 2021.
In 2011 I was in a band, and I asked the fiddler if he knew any cool tunes I could learn, and he sent links to the Contratopia web site.

Here is the Sheet music for TMG from the site along with a few other great tunes:

The tune is in G tuning and has several low Cs below the low D so what does a 5-string player do in order to get all the notes? The answer is to go out and buy a 6-string banjo and solve the problem for good. Cash flow problems prevented this solution, so I decided to just play the melody an octave above, up the neck. I don't quite remember but I think I tuned the banjo to double C tuning and capoed at the 2nd fret.

Here is a video of Contratopia playing TMG. (TMG is the 2nd tune in the Medley):

The group's CH banjo player, Pat O'Loughlin, plays a 5-String capoed at the 7th fret. Can't tell if he is in G tuning or double C. Sounds really good at any rate.

Here's a version on the Octave mandolin:

Too Many Goats is catchy as all get out and definitely, speaking from experience, ear worm material.

Oops, the link to get to the sheet music doesn't work. Have to go here:

mandotopia.com/SMT.htm

and then scroll down and then click on PDF for Loaves and Fishes and Too Many Goats.

Good stuff, I can't wait to listen to it, but we have our mutually agreed upon morning coffee radio silence.

I can't try this for a couple of hours, but it might work in the tuning aCGCD;  similar to how I play in D minor/E minor capoed.  Then you could get that low C.

Isn't it a C# that shall be played? Then aCGCD is a bad idea. If it was a modal tune (Mixolydian) your tuning should work.

My suggestion would be to play an E note instead of the C# note and keep to double D tuning. I think there are very few person that would discover this fake.

The tune is in D mixolydian, it looks like, so the C is natural.  The F# is a little tough to get, but it can be done.

Your version is fun to hear, John. When you said this was an ear worm tune I got nervous about arranging it. To get the notes I tuned to an equivalent of open G, but tuned down the 5th string a step. On cello banjo the tuning was cADF#A and the fingering wasn't hard. On a regular banjo this is equivalent to the 7th fret capo tuning used by Pat O'Loughlin, so that answers your question about his tuning. I don't know what he did with the 5th string, though.

You used to play a lot of contra dances, John. Is this how you came to listen to Contratopia?

I’m going to try it in Cumberland Gap tuning (f#BEAD). I think it will set there.
