We tend to call whatever authority arrives on the scene "first responders", but actually it is whoever is at the scene when the crisis occurs who is the real first responder. And usually the response is to run or hide, and I might well do the same. But this woman stopped a mass shooting because she was prepared and ready and did not flinch. Waiting for the authorities to arrive did not work well in Uvalde, where the SWAT team's main function was to prevent parents from rescuing their own children.

I did not hear of this. That would be a good example of gun control. The more I read about the inactions of supposedly LEO I start to get angry. So I’ll stop with this.

I first read about this on twitter and then went looking for a "legitimate" news source so as to not be accused of being brainwashed by Right Wing Conspiracy Websites. It will be interesting to see how much or little news coverage this receives, as stories of civilians successfully defending themselves or others with a firearm is not at item on the approved truth list.

I think it's called distraction theory . Anyway this sort of topic is not allowed here as far as I know.

Guys, the only acceptable stance is that firearms are horrible and firearm owners are horrible people ;)

But this thread is not about politics, or government at all. It is about that which exists beyond government, which is individuals taking responsibility for their own lives.

This is not the only banned topic here. Lets find another story as a distraction is not a good look.

Bill, I just had lunch with my brother who is retired from 30+ years as a police officer in our fairly large city.  He said unequivocally, that if the Uvalde shooting had occurred here, that officer on their force would have been in that building immediately.  He said he may not have had the courage to do it himself, but he knows others that would.  He said when four or five officers get together outside the scene of a shooting a "wait for orders", this is the result.  I say this without knowing all of the facts, so I may be wrong, but it doesn't look good for "some" law enforcement officers.

Astonishing that this is presented as some sort of feelgood 'good news' story. I read it is as "In a country where it seems easy for unstable or mentally ill people to get guns there was a completely fortuitous, unlikely and rare situation where somebody else also had a gun at exactly the right time and did exactly the right thing, and stopped a catastrophe. This was so remarkable that it made the news"

I think you UK people should keep your thoughts to your own country and not bash ours. You can't do anything to help or hinder our laws, so just worry about your own laws and country. Just my humble opinion.

As a law-abiding gun owner who also has a concealed carry permit (which I don't need now, but I still have it), I can tell you that most gun owners do not want to have to use their guns for anything like shooting a person or taking a life, but if forced to do so, we will.

If you want to shoot someone, you need a gun; if you can't get a gun you can't shoot anyone. If neither of these two people could get a gun, all you'd have is an angry, disgruntled hillbilly that's not dead.

C'mon Wayne!?!!?  .... "disgruntled hillbilly"???

As I understand things, that's grounds for being accused of USA bashing.   cheeky

For once I don't agree with you. I'm a gun owner too. My wife has a concealed weapon permit. I welcome comments from others outside this country. Maybe we could learn something.

In both cases the story starts with man with AR15. Until you start concentrating on that people will continue to be sacrificed.

I think you'd be better off trying to learn from other countries where mass shootings are very rare including those countries where there are more guns than the UK. It's disturbing that outside the USA the feelings have gone from horror to despar to shoulder shrugging oh well it's only to be expected.

Strange. I remember threads on fish and chips, the Beatles, the British royal family, the British health service, Stonehenge,  the behaviour of tourists in Abbey Road....  Americans contributed to all of these. You didn't suggest that they keep their opinions to themselves then. In fact I remember a particularly intolerant comment from you on the 'Abbey Road tourist' issue. Why so sensitive here ? I suppose you saw the recent headline th The Onion " 'No way to prevent this', says only nation where this regularly happens".

I am guessing that Sherry does not mind their comments either if they were occasionally mixed in with comments that were not bashing this country and their citizens. Oh, I have plenty of comments I could make about Brits I have met both here and in the UK, but I do not stereotype all Brits based on the ones that I have encountered.

I believe this tragedy was allowed to happen. LEO told to wait while the shooter was inside for almost an hour. He was taken out by a border patrol officer who was I believe off duty. Piss poor response by guys who are not afraid of handcuffing moms and tasing dads wanting to save their children. I believe this was allowed to happen to make Governor Abbot look incompetent. Lock down protocols where not followed and time lines don’t add up. Get your news for multiple sources and you will see the difference by their prospective in how this event unfolded.

Graham posted---"I think it's called distraction theory .--"

I've been wondering, just *what* is called distraction theory? And; what is this distraction theory? All I found on google was "distraction/conflict theory" and that does not seem to have any bearing on this. So I ask for clarification.
