We can “lock” our account. On your Home Page, select edit profile, then select LOCK ACCOUNT.

However, I don't think we can Delete our account.  frown

We may be "immortal".

Once you're on the BHO, you're not going to do well in the Federal Witness Protection Program.  smiley

True. Locking by choice is DIY. But the underlying account remains.

I can lock your account, but if I do, you'll have to contact one of the moderators to unlock it.

Go to your home page and click on "lock my account". This will lock it where no one can get in to it and you can't post. You can unlock if you decide to come back/stay on the Hangout.

Send me a PM if you want your account locked.

So how come no one has addressed his request??
He didn't ask you how to lock his account, he asked for it to be deleted.
Why don't you delete it for him???

If you'll read my first post, I addressed his request (as did Bill).  We mods do not have the authority to delete accounts, only to lock.  I also asked him to PM me if he wanted me to lock his account  I told him he could lock  his own account.

That should answer all your questions.

It does not answer all my questions so I'll be more specific, and I did read your first post as well as Bill's.  Neither you, nor Bill addressed his request to have his account deleted.  You both mentioned his account could be locked but neither of you addressed deletion at all.  We only found out you don't have the authority to do it in the above post.  So who does have the "authority"?  Can Eric delete someone's account if requested?  Is an account that is created here destined to exist for eternity?  If so, why?  Was this covered in the agreement when we signed up?   It doesn't seem unreasonable for someone to want to exit the site completely.  So since this isn't covered in the FAQ section, nor the rules section:

  1. Can someone have his or her account deleted in any circumstance? If so, who does have the authority to do it?

  2. How would someone go about requesting deletion, as you can't do it?

  3. The rules state that a member can have their membership revoked for certain offenses. When membership is revoked is the account deleted or just disabled?

  4. This site states that it currently hosts 127,011 accounts.  Should we assume that number includes every account ever created here?  No spammers, scammers, sock-puppets,  ne'er do wells nor snippy self righteous moderators have ever had their accounts deleted?

  5. It seems disingenuous to tout 127k accounts on the membership page if every single account ever created still exists and obvious scam accounts are left to exist in perpetuity.

Please advise.
Thank you.
PK

ps: maybe I've just answered my own questions.  I just did a search for member names which include a particularly nasty and potentially offensive term for a part of the female anatomy that was used rather recently in attempt to torment a certain moderator here. I'll resist the urge to post a screen-shot.  All those accounts still exist!  As stated above, seems disingenuous to include these in the member count!!  Also pretty sad that I still can see those accounts long after the offensive behavior has seemingly terminated.
Eric Schlange
C'mon Eric, should I still be able to look up these disgusting "member" names??  They'll also pop up accidentally if you happen to string the right *or wrong* three characters together. How about a little maintenance / cleanup with regard to offensive content / non-legitimate accounts.  I don't think that's too much to ask.

the GDPR law gives users the right to have a company remove all their information if they please, that being said it is a European law, but if this website has users from Europe they would have to be able to comply to that said law. meaning it is possible. meaning it should be a option

if a person had a stalker, someone after them, or a job with sensitive data, government perhaps, or under a witness protection program. I don't understand the point of making sure they cant protect themselves, unless of course its for more SEO added traffic.

at this point tho having more keywords on the site doesn't help the SEO. because every banjo player in the world is aware of this website, it would neither hurt nor help it either way. so give people the option to delete themselves. it would not effect the profits

We mods are volunteers —not employees—who moderate the forums. If the OP wants the account deleted he’ll have to contact Eric. We know the law, but don’t have software access to do those operations. Only the site owner/webmaster can do that.

Wow, this escalated quickly. You all realize his request was made less than 24 hours ago, right?

Anyway - I've deleted his account.

As for all the other stuff above... I'll say we don't count locked accounts in our account total (which is currently 127,014). So all the spammers, etc don't run that number up. They DO still exist in the system so we can see data for security purposes, although we may purge them at some point.

I'm also familiar with GDPR (way too familiar, in fact, having implemented GDPR practices for various customers and websites). More info about privacy, etc is in our privacy policy: banjohangout.org/login/privacy-policy.asp

I recall reading about this issue a few times in the past decade or so, so fwiw I don't see it as a quick escalation.

However, it is good to know that there is a KISS solution: a) request deletion b} Eric deletes account, c) everybody's happy.

So far it doesn't affect me directly, but thanks for dealing with it Eric.

Edit: ....Though I notice that when I "click on" Tom06-DELETED I get the massage that the account has been locked, not that it has been deleted????   If it has been deleted, will there be a time [soon?] when there will be no mention of it.... no way to see it or "click on" it?

Probably because a mod locked it before Eric deleted it. If you a member search, you’ll get an “account does not exist” notice. If you do a member search on a locked account, you’ll find the account with a locked-account notice.

But Eric said he deleted it.  Surely he could unlock it then delete it if that was the case of a mod locking it. Why state is was deleted when it wasn't.

Fwiw, just now, when I do a member search for "Tom06" the drop-down menu (?) gives me but one choice, "Tom06-DELETED" which then takes me to "account locked by moderator."

So my limited understanding is that it's deleted..... or locked. wink

So I see. I had not used “deleted” as part of the member name. To repeat (again), mods can’t do the software operations you guys are discussing. Beyond what we do on the forums, and locking/unlocking members, we don’t know what the software can and can’t do. All of that is Eric’s purview.

Everything about the Tom06 account was deleted (any content they'd posted, their email account linked to it, etc). That includes all personal identifying info, as GDPR demands.

I kept the account in the system, renamed, so this forum thread would survive... since people had questions. But the account is locked, and nothing more than that renamed username and this forum post.
