I recently (6 months) acquired a Wurlitzer banjo from what I was told was a banjo made by Dobson and sold under the Wurlitzer label. The banjo has been a lot of fun and very enjoyable with nylon strings and a skin head. Can anyone give me any info on this brand such as Is it unique or very common?

Wurlitzer did not make their own banjos, but neither did Dobson (Dobsons were built by Buckbee). Because Wurlitzer had instruments made by several different companies, pictures are needed for accurate ID and other information.

I had a Wurlitzer 5 string openback banjo, spun over rim, it was nice, I think it was made by Gretsch, it had an SS Stewart style peg head.

There were probably a number of makers that Wurlitzer used. Some were quite good (there were some made by Vega) and some that were quite ordinary. One cannot know anything about what yours is without some photos.
