Who are some of your favorite character actors? Most of mine are from the old days of TV and movies, and mostly Westerns and I believe most of them have passed away. These are actors you always recognize but usually never know their names.
My favorites:
Henry Jones
Arthur Hunnicutt
Bruce Dern
Lee Van Cleef
Jack Elam
Simon Oakland
Warren Oates
Lane Bradford
Denver Pyle
Royal Dano
Dennis Weaver
Victor French
Denny Miller
James Griffith
George Lindsay
Shug Fisher
And I'm sure there are a few others I can't remember at the moment.

I guess my favorite is Stephen Root, but Sean Penn is an excellent character actor as well. Peter Sellers, Margo Martindale, Benicio del Toro, Tatiana Maslani, Johnny Depp, The entire cast of American Horror Story, and future prediction, Gillian Anderson, based on her role as Eleanor Roosevelt in First Wives, check it out, she is fantastic.
*almost forgot Robert Downey jr.

Originally posted by Mad HornetI met a guy in Knoxville last year who looked just like Jack Elam. With the one stray eye and everything. He never even heard of him I was cracking up.
I met James Griffith in Detroit many years ago when I was a teenager. He was a very nice guy and on the quiet side.
Joe
Tommy Lee Jones
Clint Eastwood
Kevin Costner
Robert Duvall
These four play pretty good cowboys
In the shadow of the Duke.
He doesn't rate quite as high on my list as the above but he has time.
Brad Pitt in his military roles. Especially the movie Fury every time that movie plays I watch.

let us not forget, Marlon Brando ;
after a hiatus in the early 1970s, Brando was generally content with being a highly paid character actor in supporting roles, such as Jor-El in Superman (1978), as Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now (1979), and Adam Steiffel in The Formula (1980), before taking a nine-year break from film. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Brando was paid a record $3.7 million ($17 million in inflation-adjusted dollars) and 11.75% of the gross profits for 13 days' work on Superman.
Brando was ranked by the American Film Institute as the fourth-greatest movie star among male movie stars whose screen debuts occurred in or before 1950. He was one of only six actors named in 1999 by Time magazine in its list of the 100 Most Important People of the Century.[8] In this list, Time also designated Brando as the "Actor of the Century".[9]
