Answer: When it's paid for with a Maude Lewis painting.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/london/maud-lewis-painting-auction-1.6439430

An artist, who had been helping Maude Lewis to survive with her art, gave the restaurant owners one of her paintings for a grilled cheese sandwich fifty years ago. They put it up for auction, and the estimated selling price was $35,000. (When I read the article and checked the auction site, it was already at $38,500.)

Must've been a really good grilled cheese. The painting sold for ten times the estimate.

There's a movie about Maude Lewis, Maudie, starring Sally Hawkins and Ethan Hawke.

(At our first art auction in '98, a bunch of Maude Lewis paintings [from Clyde Gilmour's estate] were up for bids. The number of bidding cards that went up for each painting looked like a sharks' feeding frenzy. All went for over the estimate.)

Sure, the painting is nice, but I'd like to see a photo of the grilled cheese sandwich.

Sorry, no photo, but the woman said that they didn't make ordinary grilled cheese sandwiches. She said it was really good cheese on good fresh baked bread.

Maybe it was like the best grilled cheese I ever had, at Brown's Bay Inn on Wolfe Island, a ferry ride from Kingston. It was white cheddar on French (or Italian?) bread.

Who is paying $35,000 for THAT painting??? Was that in USD or Iranian Rial ( 35,000 Rial = $0.83 USD).

They didn't pay $35,000.

They paid $350,000.

They didn't pay $350,000.

With the 18% buyer's premium for the auction house tacked on, they paid $413,000.

The $35,000 mentioned in the first post was the presale estimate. It blew past that, big time.

Well, there's the rub. Online bidding is bringing big money into Canadian art. That means: 1) Big money is driving up the prices. 2) The big money will make it almost impossible for "ordinary" people to afford original art. (Some may say that's already the case.) Who pays hundreds of millions for a painting, and does it go on a wall or into a vault?

Who makes the profit? In most of these transactions the artist is long dead. Lawren Harris was already wealthy, but many artists didn't fare too well - and their art wasn't worth much until after their death. It seems the middlemen are doing quite fine. We lucked out with a Manly MacDonald for $100. If anyone else at that auction had actually known ... .

Well, luckily there are some "undiscovered" artists toiling away out there. I once said to a gallery owner, "We have old dead guys on our walls." She replied, "I prefer to support living artists." Point taken. There are lots of studio tours in these parts. Here's what came from one tour:
