I have thought about this very issue on and off for a great while but never pursued it. Does anyone know of a “Lick “ transposer type of software as where you might enter a particular banjo lick via a recording and it will at minimum create a tab for the lick? I’m well aware that some artists give lessons etc but for example if I had let’s say ten licks from different tunes I needed tabbed out, it would really be neat..

I have no idea whether there is any kind of software that would do that, but those who play by ear could probably listen to the lick and figure out what was being played and write it down. Might cost you some money to have someone do it for you but.... if you need it done bad enough, you'd pay the price.

I'm pretty sure software that can do that doesn't exist. Software probably couldn't be intelligent enough to know where a banjo player probably hit the various notes in a lick. Think of the difference in note placement between Scruggs and melodic styles. And fretting of the fifth string.

What Sherry said is true: There are players/teachers who will tab out stuff for you for a fee.  I thought Russel Sawler (Bluegrass Outlet) was in the business of custom-tabbing recordings. That turns up in Google results but I can't find any mention of that on his site. Worth contacting him to ask.

Here's a Google search for custom banjo tablature transcribing

People occasionally post requests in this forum for licks to be tabbed out. They usually expect something for nothing. Sometimes they get their wish. Sometimes their request goes unanswered. I've responded to a few such requests over the years when something appealed to me, I enjoyed the challenge, and I had the time. There are some others here who don't mind tabbing out an occasional lick.

Asking for one or two might be OK. But coming back to the free well for as many as 10 would probably be pushing it.

Yer outta luck Mike,
No software would put the entire teaching world of banjo and guitar out of business. Copyright people would be all over that. There are lots of attorneys on BHO who will probably chime in...sorry....Jack

Thanks to all. Jack you maybe right though I think they might have a tough time with just licks. I would not expect anybody to translate to tan for free. I’m gonna keep looking though.

I'd be happy to tab something out for you if you need.
Just shoot me a PM.

At least theoretically it is possible. If you have a sound file (mp3), there are software available to convert mp3 to a midi flie. The midi file can be imported to TablEdit. I tried it but the result was bad. First, the sound file must contain only one instrument because the software cannot filter out the banjo from other instruments. Secondly, the free mp3 to midi converters that are available seems to be very poor and gives wrong conversion. Third, I found that the mp3 to midi software misinterpreted a lot of tones, and put in a lot of over tones as separate tones. It has also difficulties to identify slides and chokes.

So the best is to go to one of the custom transcribers., if you don't manage to transcribe it yourself.
