Just curios if Gibson ever made 3 thumb screw mastertone banjos, or were all 4 thumb screws?

There is an RB 75 listed in Jim Mills’ book that has 3 thumb screws.

There are also many 4 string conversions from non mastertone models with 3 thumb screws. Post some pictures

All through the 1950s and earlier 1960s Mastertone RB 250s had 3 thumbscrews. I think the very first RB 100s and RB 150s may have had 4 thumbscrews (late 1940s, very early 1950s. RB 500s and 800s in the 1960s had a mix of 3 screw and 4 screw.

Does anyone have a pic of the prewar RB 75 with 3 thumb screws referenced in Mills book?

Dick, the very early (1948-1949) 150s and 100s only had 3 thumbscrews, not 4; however, the two front ones were located in the 4th flange opening back from the neck notch on either side. These were then moved to the 3rd opening back in later production

Thanks Eric, I thought I had seen a few early 100s and 150s for sale with 4 thumbscrews.

Oh wow... that's interesting. Maybe they were like the style 1's and 2's... some with 4, some with 3

Anything was possible with Gibson and if it was possible, they usually did it. Gotta get instruments and orders shipped if the doors are gonna stay open and Gibson was well known for doing what it took.
