Hi,

A few months ago, I started programming a new feature that is starting to be really effective. It is the import of tablature images. All graphic formats are supported and also PDF files. In TablEdit, the function is found in the File->Import->Import Image menu.

If you have a good PDF file, it can save you a few hours of tabbing.

I tried it last night with a PDF of Angeline the Baker downloaded from Noam Pikelny's school. A short tune. Very clear image.

Most notes -- numbers and timing/stems were correct. That's the good.

TablEdit did not pick up any hammers or slides. But since the target note was almost always correct, fixing them mostly just required entering H or S.  It also did not pick up 1st and 2nd endings or repeats.

Still, I think with manual correction it was faster than my entering the entire tune from scratch.

Just tried it on a couple of PDF tabs and it looks to have around a 80-90% accuracy. Not bad and it does save quite a bit of work. Fixing the little things is not a big deal and is certainly quite a bit faster then putting in each and every note.

I did not notice that if the PDF tab has both Tablature and Music Notation, it does not work as well or does not work at all. For those PDF's, you could always do screen captures on the tab parts only, past them in Word and print as a PDF file.

I did have to install Ghostrscript to make it work but that is not a big deal either. Just went to the website, downloaded it and installed it.

I do have a couple of questions though:

1. Is it supposed to work on a pure 100% tab file or is there a way to make it work on a combination of tab and music notation?

2. Will it work on a pure 100% music notation PDF file?

Hi,

Thank you for your messages.

Some answers to your questions can be found on the help page:

tabledit.com/help/english/impo...age.shtml

I will add the clarification that TablEdit does not recognize slurs and endings/repeats.

If it has not found stems in tablature, TablEdit uses the notation staff to identify the rhythm but it only uses the bass voice at the moment.

It works fine for fingerpicking (thank to the note stems) but it doesn't work when you just have a melody voice. I'll improve that.

Don't hesitate to send me the files you can't import correctly.

Kudos to you Matthieu! I would not have thought that doing that would have been possible.  Now, is there any way that we could arrange for you to take over Microsoft?

Thank you Wayne :-)

And it's not over yet. I'm sure the number recognition and note placement can still be improved.

For your information, I have added the feature to TEFview and TEFpad for iOS.

Many thanks Matthieu. I haven't tried this new functionality yet, but will soon. An already superb software product continues to improve!

What is amazing is that in my opinion TablEdit has become the world standard in tablature writing software. It is one of my 4 main music programs for everyday practicing. The other 3 being Amazing Slowdowner, Transcribe! and Band In A Box.

Well done Mattheiu!

Quite a few new features in TablEdit v3.01 b3e.

First, a new algorithm to distinguish 1's and 4's from other numbers. This gives a much better accuracy in recognising numbers.

The line recognition algorithm has also been improved. The Scan option is now rarely needed.

In the area of rhythms and timing from the music staff, you will also notice a real improvement.

Frankly, three months ago, I couldn't imagine that TE could achieve such good results from a bunch of pixels.

Once again, it is your feedback that allows me to improve the program. So don't hesitate if you notice any anomalies.

FYI, I've created two demo videos about the new feature for Mac and Windows.
