I was trolling through Ebay today looking at banjo parts listings and came across one for a pre war Gibson label.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/373673943240?hash=item5700b3e0c8:g:DLsAAOSwUjxf6krM

I pulled out my archives and looked at both a genuine label and one of the older 'fakes' that used to appear on Ebay. I examined both carefully and to be honest, I couldn't tell the difference between the original and the one appearing now on Ebay.

Can anyone look at this and advise?

thanks

It's a good copy. What's your interest in it? Do you want to put it in a banjo? Do you want to fool someone?

Personally I don't agree with putting Mastertone labels in the rims of banjos that are clearly not Mastertones. If someone makes a good banjo, I think they should be proud to put their own name in there. Like the fine Huber banjos.

It’s pretty spot on comparing it to an authentic label I’m staring at as we speak…worst part is that the seller is in Marysville, TN….someone right in the heart of our community is faking labels.

I have no interest in it Dick other than curiosity. I believe that someone here on the BHO originally created those fake labels with the differences so that if anyone purchased one to put on a 'Gibson' banjos with the intention of passing it off as an original, those in the know could spot it as a fake.

It is a good reproduction label, likely the closest I have seen to an original. But when you compare side by side to an original, there are subtle differences. The easiest one to describe is the line above Gibson Inc. does not have the same alignment. The copy label's line is a little to the right. I know I would have only noticed that detail by putting the two side by side.

For so many years we had the benefit of looking to see if the I's lined up in "Workmanship" and "Will" (they don't on a popular copy label). Now we have to memorize a new set of subtleties.

All who study the two examples of decals I have posted, please post other differences you see. It will help us all in authenticating original Gibson Mastertone banjos.

These repro labels, especially the water-slide decals, look good on the window of your truck or camper.

There is a slight alignment difference in the Gibson, Inc. and the Kalamazoo, Mich. at the bottom. Compare the last O in Kalamazoo and the h in Mich to the letters above them.
Overall the font seems slightly thinner on the repro, but may vary on different labels.

Pointing out the fine differences that Mastertone aficionados would look for, is just helping future counterfeiters IMHO. I can see one GLARING difference right off the bat, but I'm not going to explain it, in order see more perfect fake labels.

The much fainter full stop after PREPAID maybe ?

I think we need to forget the labels and look at the Banjo

The re-pro is missing the period after prepaid?

The punctuation marks are too faint on the repro and the letter 'I' in "INC" and "MICH" don't line up correctly.

What is involved in making a label like this? If it is very expensive, who would go to the trouble of creating just a few?
