I got into and chose old time music because of the abundance of jams and festivals available to attend and now they have all but disappeared! That has taken a lot of my desire and ambition to keep learning and to get better because there is nowhere to go anymore to enjoy what you have worked hard to accomplish! Does anyone else feel the same way and does anybody think that it will ever grow back to pre-covid normality again in the near future? Just really discouraged with all the restrictions and politics that have ruined a good thing!

I guess it depends on what TV channel your jam group likes to watch. Lots of jams in my area still.

I think we all decided that we'd rather die of COVID than live in a world without folk music and jam circles.

Great answer and i agree 100%!!! The problem now is .......Please try to keep this from becoming political and heated, but everybody demands a vaccine shot proof and that is the most ridicolous demand ever and i will refuse to go period because of it!

The "no politics" rule has been a good one for BHO. It still is. When you all grow up, you'll understand.

Still a lot of jam sessions in the NYC/Long Island area, all but 1 are in bars. All require that you have been fully vaccinated. Being 67, quadruple heart bypass, 3 open heart surgeries and respiratorilly challenged, I had no issues getting vaccinated.

Maybe you need to find a new group.  I go to a couple here locally and that subject has never come up.

So here we go.......Do you think that the new normal is that everyone should have to show their medical records to attend a jam???

I attend bluegrass jams. They shut down when cases go up, restart when they go down. No medical records required as yet. Don’t think they will be since I live well outside a metropolitan area.

Let's try to stay on the non-political topic to avoid getting locked. The topic is "will old time jams disappear due to covid". I think that topic can be discussed without politics involved. And I think the answer to that is "no", regardless of your opinions on COVID or politics.

I think what will happen with jams is the same thing that will happen with our entire society. Basically we're going to have segregation and parallel social groups. You'll have vaccinated jams and nonvaccinated jams. But the jams will still exist. Folk music isn't going away.

As far as needing proof of vaccination to go to a jam, I just keep a fake vax card. The way I figure it, if I'm not sick then I'm not contagious, and I had covid a few months ago and got over it so no worries there. The vax card at a private event is really about the appearance of safety, more than anything else. So, play to the crowd, do the dance, no harm no foul, I figure. Obviously the fake cards don't work for official regulatory/employment documentation, but for private events or concerts they work just fine, and for recurring events you really only need to show the card once and everyone accepts that you're vaccinated from then on. You've also got to watch what you say, balance your goals, and plan for the future. Sometimes you've got to take drastic measures if you want to play with a good group of musicians. In one jam I regularly attend, I actually have a different persona I keep and everyone thinks I'm super pro-vaccine so they didn't even ask me to show proof. I know that's dishonest and maybe a bit manipulative, but I didn't want to be ostracized for having different opinions. I think "go along to get along" is useful in these situations, even if you're only pretending to go along.

Here in North Somerset our monthly local OT session, held in a pub, restarted in October. There are a few pre-lockdown long-time session regulars who have said that though they intend in the long run to rejoin us, they're not comfortable being in the poorly ventilated public bar of a pub at the moment. We've got around that by hosting two monthly sessions; the public pub session that usually attracts around 10-12 and has an open invite, and a recently established monthly small invite-only session for a core group of 6-8 people that is held in a more controlled space in the parish hall. That means that some friends get to enjoy both local sessions each month, but more importantly the friends that aren't keen to join the pub session for health reasons are happy to attend the smaller invite-only session and don't miss out on playing together with friends. We schedule the sessions two weeks apart to spread the meet-ups evenly through the month.

Another OT session in Somerset that I regularly went to pre-lockdown was set to restart in November but is now back on hold.

Okay, we're on the verge of getting this topic locked. Everyone knows and understands the no politics rule. Please leave political thoughts and opinions out of this topic or it's gone.

First and last warning.

Yellow Sky Blue Sun ... Way to display your contempt for the rights and sensibilities of others.

Mods, I've been on here for years and never had to be censured. If this is the time, I'm okay with it.

Jams like all other things will adapt and move forward like everything else. We are very early in figuring this all out. A couple of years is short term in really getting a handle on how we move forward. And as far as fake cards and lying I’m just glad your not in my area. Things will eventually smooth out.

@chip arnold Take what I say as you will, no sweat off my back. For what it's worth I don't think you should be censured by the mods. Even if we disagree I think we can have a normal conversation about it. In general I will agree with you that I have contempt for the sensibilities of most other people (in other words, I think most other people are morons).

For my part, I don't view it as contempt, I just put it in the same category as all the other "metaphorical masks" we have to wear and hoops we have to jump through when we go out and interact with society. I do things that I normally wouldn't do all the time, just to make other people comfortable. Everyone does.

I wrote what I wrote to provide a practical and effective solution for people that are nonvaccinated and want to attend jams. It's not political and doesn't break any BHO rules that I'm aware of.

@banjobrewer You wouldn't know it if I was. And you can bet dollars to donuts that there's people within your social group that misconstrue their political views to get along with other people, and mostly likely there's lots of people in your community using fake vax cards for social events.

Yellow ...
"I wrote what I wrote to provide a practical and effective solution for people that are nonvaccinated and want to attend jams".

Seriously? OT musicians I know would think your "solution" was reason for you to be sent packing.

"In general I will agree with you that I have contempt for the sensibilities of most other people (in other words, I think most other people are morons)".

Lovely.

When you get Covid from a vaccinated person and lose two friends that were vaccinated and watch someone you love that is vaccinated almost die from Covid and currently have a neighbor on a ventilator that is vaccinated…..I think my immune system after having Covid is better than yours with a shot…..but that’s just my opinion no need to hate me and yes I think vaccinated people spread Covid more than vaccinated people do! Blessings to all

There's a jam I sometimes attend, hadn't been there for a while because of covid lockdowns. Stopped in at one point, before vaccines were available, bunch of guys sitting in a tight circle inside, nobody wearing masks. I didn't stay, haven't been back.

I miss jams, but as the old lung association PSA says, "When you can't breathe, nothing else matters" , and being in several enhanced risk categories, Ill pick health over jams. To be honest, I'm not that good, they won't miss me.
